Teens Confront Worst Summer Job Market in Years: What You Need to Know

Getting a summer job is a rite of passage for many teens. But this year, it seems like the summer job scene is a bit like a kiddie pool with a slow leak—hard to fill up. Research from a well-known placement firm reveals that teen hiring for summer jobs plummeted by a whopping 25.6% in 2025, and the forecast for this year isn’t looking much better. It’s set to dip another 1.4%, marking yet another record low for young job seekers.

The economy has been on a rollercoaster ride lately, and the reasons for this slowdown are not your typical fare. Last summer, uncertainty loomed large over hiring, primarily due to tariffs. This year, however, the focus has shifted to high gas prices and the rising cost of everyday goods. This unfortunate combination is causing consumers to tighten their purse strings, which is significant because less consumer spending means less demand in areas like entertainment, hospitality, and retail. If people aren’t heading out to grab a burger or catch a movie, businesses simply don’t need as many teens on their payroll.

Among the various summer jobs out there, being a lifeguard remains a trusty stalwart, almost like that dependable umbrella at the beach. Lifeguarding seems somewhat insulated from the ups and downs of the economy, so the demand for young lifeguards is still fairly robust. It may not make you rich, but at least it offers a reliable (and sun-soaked) opportunity for teens looking to earn some summer cash while keeping swimmers safe.

For teens navigating this challenging job market, networking is key. It’s like trying to land a spot on a competitive sports team; sometimes, who you know can make all the difference. Teens can tap into their parents’ connections or utilize their school networks to discover job openings. Just like in a game of musical chairs, knowing where the seats are can put you at an advantage.

Besides networking, making a memorable impression is crucial. This means polishing up that resume and perhaps even dressing the part, because first impressions matter. It’s not just about having a job; it’s also about standing out in a sea of applicants. So, while summer jobs may be dwindling faster than ice cream on a hot day, with a little determination and creativity, savvy teens can still make their summer job dreams a reality. Remember, the sun shines bright, and there are plenty of opportunities still waiting to be discovered!
