Yet another officer has been caught beating up a citizen in the name of “public safety”…blah blah blah blah blah.
Seriously. How many times are articles like this going to get written? A thousand? A million? A bajillion? A more appropriate made up number?
Well here’s what happened this time.
A woman was apparently walking on a busy highway in California, west of downtown Los Angeles on Interstate 10. Granted, that’s not good for public safety or the woman’s safety, either.
True. But instead of helping the woman off the highway and ascertaining whether or not she was in some sort of danger or succumbing to a mental issue, a California Highway Patrol officer thought it better to straddle her and beat her repeatedly into the ground.
Here’s the picture:
Really looks like she’s being all kinds of “protected and served” right?
Here’s what the Houston Chronicle reported:
The woman had been walking on Interstate 10 west of downtown Los Angeles, endangering herself and people in traffic, and the officer was trying to restrain her, CHP Assistant Chief Chris O’Quinn said at a news conference.
The officer is on administrative leave while the patrol investigates. He has not been identified.
O’Quinn said the incident report listed no injuries for the woman, who would not give her name. She is undergoing psychiatric evaluation, he said…
Diaz, a Los Angeles native who now lives in West LA, told the AP in a phone interview Friday that he arrived when the woman was walking off the freeway. He said she turned around only after the officer shouted something to her.”He agitated the situation more than helped it,” said Diaz, who started filming soon after.
When the video begins, the officer already is on top of the woman and delivering blows. She can be seen wriggling and trying to sit up.
Stories like this surface again and again and again and… Some would argue that the only reason we know about it more in modern society is the ubiquitous nature of small, handheld cameras these days.
The truth, though, is our police have been in the process of being militarized for some time now and it’s only getting worse by the day.
THIS is the American police state, and it’s frustrating and disgusting ad nauseam. Cops beating up and killing handicapped people. Old people. Tasing small children. Gunning down car wreck survivors running to them for help. A multitude of dead dogs! Even if you call the cops for help, someone might just get killed.
The kicker, though is what CHP Assistant Chief O’Quinn said to try to reassure the media about his agency (you know, after making the requisite excuses for the unnamed officer who straddled and beat down a woman for walking on the side of the highway):
“We are known as an agency that really polices itself,” O’Quinn said. [emphasis added]
Yeah. He really did say that.
How’s that working out for you, California? The rest of the nation?
Guess that’s the ultimate question: corrupt or not, who polices the police?
