Border Czar Calls Out Bishops: Immigration Laws Matter More Than Feelings

When asked about the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ dramatic rebuke of the administration’s deportation campaign, Border Czar Tom Homan didn’t mince words — he told reporters flatly that “the Catholic Church is wrong” on this issue. That blunt answer landed because it cut through sanctimonious posturing and reminded Americans that enforcing immigration laws is not optional.

The bishops’ “special message” made headlines this month after a nearly unanimous vote condemning what they called “indiscriminate mass deportation,” an emotional appeal that puts pastoral sympathy ahead of public safety. Millions of patriotic Catholics quietly disagree with priests who take political positions that ignore the real-world consequences of open borders.

Homan was right to push back: secure borders save lives, and enforcement prevents cartels from trafficking people and fentanyl through our communities. When federal agents remove convicted criminals or those ordered deported by judges, they are protecting American neighborhoods, not launching a punitive crusade — and Homan made that practical, humane case forcefully.

Enough with the moral lecturing from bishops who would rather score political points than offer constructive solutions for immigration reform. If church leaders want credibility, they should help communities integrate legal immigrants and advocate for sane policy, not cheer on a message that will only encourage dangerous journeys north.

Conservative voices saw Homan’s exchange as a necessary repudiation of elite hypocrisy, and commentators like Dave Rubin even circulated the clip to show how unmoored the cultural class has become. Rubin’s Direct Message segment highlighted the moment because it revealed an essential truth: enforcing laws is the job of the government, and those calling for leniency must reckon with the human cost of chaos at the border.

The broader point Homan made — that institutions preaching open hospitality still secure their own perimeters — is a hard truth people respect, even if it offends the metropolitan clerisy. The American people want a government that protects its citizens first; religious leaders can and should minister to the vulnerable, but they must not undermine the rule of law or the safety of our neighborhoods.

Patriots should applaud officials who put country before optics and demand that church authorities stop enabling policies that would turn humane impulses into deadly incentives. This moment is a call to stand with law enforcement, back common-sense immigration reforms, and reject the performative virtue of elites who lecture from a safe distance while others pay the price.
