The Democratic Party seems to have gotten themselves into quite a pickle. It’s as if they’ve taken a dive off the political deep end and are rummaging around for issues that almost nobody supports. The former Speaker of the House pointed out how the Democrats are seemingly lining up to take the most extreme stances possible, like some sort of political competition to see who can bewilder the public the most. From advocating for positions on illegal immigration that aren’t exactly crowd-pleasers to supporting males competing in female sports, they appear to have embraced a radicalism that doesn’t resonate with the everyday American.

The current meltdown of the Democratic Party is reaching a point where it’s almost comedic. The former Speaker commented on past Democratic reactions, such as Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen’s apparent indifference towards violence committed by illegal immigrants, contrasting it with the present outrage over a deportation tied to President Trump. Here’s possibly the most amusing part: if any other president had ordered this deportation, it might have gone unnoticed or even been quietly supported. But not with Trump in office.

Those on the Democratic side seem to have developed an incurable case of what some call Trump Derangement Syndrome. It’s hard not to notice how the Democrats seem to react in erratic ways, almost reacting against any move Trump makes as if it’s inherently bad, regardless of the policy’s merits. It’s as if President Trump has a special talent for pushing their buttons, making them go haywire and make decisions that could best be described as puzzling.

One might wonder if the lavish donor dinners are influencing this political oblivion. Maybe it’s the champagne and fancy hors d’oeuvres making Democrats think they’re courageous when they’re just out of touch? Perhaps it’s time for them to step away from cocktail parties and start having real conversations with ordinary Americans. The disconnect couldn’t be clearer when the donors’ praises loudly contrast with the voters’ preferences.

So, the Democrats might want to ease off the political extremism and think a little more about the average voter. Maybe a bit of fresh air away from Washington would help them find their bearings again. After all, governing isn’t about doing whatever it takes to oppose Trump. It’s about serving the people. Relaxing with a clearer head and a more sensible approach might allow the party to find its way back to being a serious political force. But until then, the spectacle continues.
