The scene at the Democrats’ recent gathering was akin to organizing a festive celebration only to have tumbleweeds as the sole attendees. It was billed as a momentous occasion with all the makings of a rallying cry for the ‘voters of tomorrow,’ yet it seems the memo was lost en route to the party. Even the presence of Kamala Harris, freshly returned from a prolonged absence, couldn’t energize the atmosphere. Whether her tan was more intriguing than her speech is up for debate, but her message seemed as vague as her current role in the administration. She expressed gratitude for the younger generation’s advocacy, addressing everything under the sun from climate change to gun violence, but the enthusiasm felt about as genuine as a politician’s promise on election eve.
As Kamala took the podium, the technical glitches that followed summed up the current state of the Democratic party: static, incomprehensible, and a bit hard on the ears. A classic case of all flash with no substance. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair didn’t mince words, acknowledging that the party had indeed hit rock bottom. It’s refreshing, in a way, to see such candid admittance of failure, but when your compass needle settles on rock bottom as the new north, one might say there’s a steep climb ahead.
The question on everyone’s mind is where have all the so-called “great” Democratic leaders gone? While the party sings hymns about protecting democracy, it seems like its knights in shining armor have taken an extended vacation. With their leader notoriously touring the wilderness in swimming attire, the optics are less ‘Commander-in-Chief’ and more ‘commander at sea’. As for the rest of the Democrat line-up, they appear to be scrambling over each other like a fraternity that’s run out of punch. The idea that diverse voices enrich political discourse is lost when those voices end up muddled in their own din.
Unfortunately, the Democrat’s plans to rally the troops appear to be as effective as pushing water uphill. The only one who seems to have mastered the art of the festivity within their ranks is Hunter Biden, always ready to bring his unique brand of merriment to any gathering. But his track record makes one wonder whether the DNC will ever extend an invite to Thanksgiving dinner.
In stark contrast, the party of Lincoln is busy doing what they do best: delivering results and having the last laugh. With economic numbers leaping over expectations, and foreign shores ready to sign on the dotted line for trade deals, the Republicans seem to be not only the life of the party but the ones throwing it. As the Democrats muddle over who’s going to take the wheel next, perhaps one should take a page out of the GOP’s book, focusing less on costumes and more on keeping the lights on. After all, the last thing they need is another party where the applause comes from a canned track and not a crowd eager for their return to center stage.
