US Strategy Shift: A Bold New Approach to Defeat Russia and Iran

In today’s topsy-turvy world, it seems we are in desperate need of a guiding light—a new X, if you will. Steve Forbes recently gave a nod to a historical article that changed the course of American foreign policy way back in 1947, penned by the wise George Kennan. Most people might not recognize the name, but this clever diplomat’s insights laid the foundation for what became known as the containment strategy in response to the ever-expanding Soviet Union after World War II.

Kennan, a Russian expert stationed in Moscow, wrote the now-famous piece anonymously for Foreign Affairs magazine. Imagine being so influential that your thoughts end up shaping an entire era while your name remains in the shadows! After the war, everyone in the United States was hopeful for a harmonious relationship with the Soviet Union, our former ally. Alas, the Kremlin had other plans. Rather than becoming friends, the Soviets were busy flexing their muscles, establishing puppet governments in Eastern Europe, refusing to retreat from northern Iran, and stirring up trouble in the communist movements of Western Europe.

Washington was left scratching its head, trying to figure out how to respond to the Soviet bear’s antics. Kennan’s first groundbreaking document, famously dubbed the long telegram, shined a light on the Kremlin’s historical thirst for aggression, revealing that communism was merely a tool for their expansionist ambitions. This wasn’t just a fleeting moment of confusion; it was a wake-up call that prompted a seismic shift in how the U.S. viewed its role on the global stage. Instead of withdrawing troops back home, America adopted a bold, new policy of containment, signaling to the world that the U.S. would actively counter Soviet advances while promoting democratic ideals.

Why is this relevant today? Fast forward to the present, and one can’t shake the feeling that we are wandering through a fog much like our forebears did in the 1940s. With wild policies that seem to take inspiration from the land of make-believe, such as turning to windmills while phasing out fossil fuels, the rhetoric of our leaders frequently leaves citizens scratching their heads. With no clear guiding principle—like containment—there’s a palpable sense of anxiety about what lies ahead.

The world is indeed at loose ends, akin to a kite desperately trying to soar but stuck in a tree. Forbes argues that it’s time for a new X to navigate through the maelstrom of uncertainty. Rather than attempting to remake hostile nations into “responsible global players,” we need decisive strategies rooted in reality instead of fantasy. The stakes are high, and without a coherent plan, there’s potential for chaos ahead.

So, as we reflect on Kennan’s wisdom and the lessons of yesteryear, let’s hope that we find ourselves a new X—someone who can not only inspire but also lead our nation through these turbulent times. The past has lessons that can guide us into a more prosperous future, provided that we make wise choices and prioritize the principles that support freedom, democracy, and growth. With a little luck and clarity of thought, there may yet be a way through the fog.
