Trump’s 200th Executive Order: A Bold Move for America

In recent news, there has been quite the buzz among Republican circles about a new proposal to rename the Department of Defense to the Department of War. It seems that some lawmakers, like Senators Mike Lee and Rick Scott, are longing for the good old days when America’s military was explicitly about warfighting. They believe this change is needed to refocus on the military’s primary mission: to defend the nation and its interests, rather than dabble in what they consider distractions like diversity and inclusion policies under the current administration.

Senator Josh Hawley, never one to shy away from a battle cry, is fully on board with this idea. He’s been vocal about the need to ditch what he describes mockingly as “a DEI seminar” approach to military leadership. According to him, the military should not be involved in what he sees as social experiments, including funding for transgender surgeries and abortions, but should instead concentrate on its core function—protecting America from threats near and far.

As if to drive home the point, the chatter continued about the supposed end of “soft power” diplomacy. One could almost hear the nostalgic sighs for a time when the military’s primary role was crystal clear. With skilled negotiators like the current President in office, there’s a belief among some conservatives that showing military might—especially from the newly-termed Department of War—will rebuild global respect and fear for the United States. It’s a viewpoint that certainly raises eyebrows and makes one wonder if ruffling diplomatic feathers is truly the route to ensure long-term peace.

Not everyone on the right agrees with the proposed name change, though. Critics argue that calling it the Department of War might just be dressing up old slogans of strength that don’t necessarily hold up in the current global context. Some view this initiative as a step backward, embracing nostalgia rather than recognizing the complex, modern challenges the U.S. military faces today beyond mere force—a point of contention even within Republican ranks.

And so, the debate rages on. Whether this proposal gains traction or not, it clearly underlines a bigger disagreement over what America’s military priorities should be. Should the focus be solely on warfighting? Or is there room—and indeed a necessity—for the military to adapt to changing times with different strategies? As with many things in politics, it seems the only certainty is more debate—and perhaps more name-calling and sarcastic quips—before any concrete decision is reached.
