A beautiful young woman who fled war in Ukraine to build a new life in America was brutally murdered by a career criminal on a Charlotte train last month. Iryna Zarutska, just 23 years old, loved her adopted country so much that her family chose to bury her here instead of taking her home. The Ukrainian refugee had learned English, found work, and dreamed of becoming a veterinary assistant before a monster ended her life.
Decarlos Brown Jr. sat behind Iryna on that August evening and stabbed her three times in the throat for no reason at all. This wasn’t his first rodeo with violence either. Brown had been arrested 14 times before, including a conviction for armed robbery in 2015.
While Democrats made excuses about mental health and court failures, President Trump delivered the strong leadership America needed. Trump demanded Brown face the death penalty for this heinous crime. The President called it exactly what it was – a preventable tragedy caused by weak policies that put criminals before innocent people.
Attorney General Pam Bondi stepped up and filed federal charges that could put this monster away forever. She blamed the murder on failed soft-on-crime policies that have plagued Democratic cities for years. Brown should never have been free to kill an innocent woman who came here seeking the American dream.
The Democratic mayor of Charlotte tried to shift blame to courts and magistrates instead of taking responsibility. Meanwhile, there wasn’t even security on the train where this poor girl was slaughtered. This is what happens when liberal politicians care more about coddling criminals than protecting law-abiding citizens.
Iryna Zarutska represented everything good about America and legal immigration. She came here legally, learned our language, worked hard, and embraced our country. Her family said she loved America so much they wanted her buried on American soil.
This tragedy shows why we need President Trump’s tough approach to crime and public safety. Career criminals like Brown should be locked up permanently after multiple violent offenses. No more revolving door justice that puts killers back on the streets.
