In Portland, the familiar rumble of Antifa protests seems to echo through the city yet again, this time in a particularly dramatic showdown at an ICE facility. The reason? Protesters are rallying against President Trump’s order to fortify the city with federal troops. Apparently, some folks just can’t stand the idea of a little law and order being restored.
President Trump, in his usual style of direct communication via Truth Social, announced that he would be sending federal troops at the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, and under the leadership of Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth. The message was clear: protect the war-ravaged Portland and ICE facilities from attacks by Antifa and other “domestic terrorists.” The President authorized full force if necessary, causing quite a stir among Oregon’s Democratic leaders who took swift action to express their discontent.
One might think that with the dramatic rise in assaults on ICE agents nationwide compared to last year, as reported, there would be a welcome sigh of relief with this new federal reinforcement. But instead, Democratic lawmakers decry it as a gross abuse of power. The mayor and other local leaders seem to believe that allowing chaos and rioting in the streets keeps Portland a bastion of freedom and peace. Unfortunately, their version of ‘peace’ looks a lot like mayhem to those who appreciate the rule of law.
Further complicating matters, local personalities insist that sending troops will only escalate the situation, spread chaos, and promote fear. Yet, it appears the consistent chaos is already alive and well in Portland. If the folks pedaling their bikes and enjoying sports in the park find the presence of troops unsettling, perhaps they should peek at the reality of what unchecked violent protests have wrought against businesses and residents who don’t subscribe to the lawless agenda.
To top it all off, there are planned protests outside the facility, likely another attempt to flaunt their disdain for anything resembling government authority. It’s almost as if these activists have forgotten that ICE officers are part of the local community too. At the end of the day, the protection and safety of law enforcement officers should be a priority, and with President Trump’s firm hand, the support and protection they need is forthcoming. No doubt, many upstanding citizens would enjoy the sight of Portland emerging from its self-imposed chaos, even if it requires a bit of stern oversight.
