The FBI has moved to schedule interviews with each member of the group as federal authorities weigh whether the remarks crossed legal lines or sought to impair military morale and discipline, an extraordinary step but one that reflects how seriously the government is treating these allegations. Americans who revere the rule of law should want the facts examined, and if career officers or sitting senators leverage their service to encourage insubordination, there must be consequences.
Legal scholars have been quick to say that, strictly speaking, calling for troops to refuse unlawful orders does not meet the narrow statutory definition of sedition — and that context and intent matter in any criminal inquiry.
