Ex-Ambassador Warns: Nigeria a Death Trap for Christians

Over in Nigeria, an alarming situation has been unfolding, capturing the attention of international observers and activists alike. This West African nation has devolved into one of the most perilous places on the globe for Christians, thanks to a relentless wave of Islamist violence. More than 600 Christian clerics have raised their voices in objection, while over 1,000 Christian communities have been targeted, resulting in widespread devastation. One can’t help but wonder why the global community seems to be taking their sweet time to respond.

Enter former U.S. International Religious Freedom Ambassador, Sam Brownback, who has not only observed the region’s turmoil firsthand but has also been a vocal advocate for intervention. He is elated that former President Donald Trump chose to tackle the issue head-on, sending a clear message to these Islamist extremists in Nigeria. The position is simple: this cannot go on. Brownback believes that unless there’s global action, including from the likes of the United Nations, the situation will only deteriorate further. One must pause to ask: where has the U.N. been in all of this?

It seems the U.N. has been lazing on the sidelines, sipping their coffees, when they should be playing a more active role in calling out and combating Islamic terrorism in the region. There have been three coups in the surrounding areas, with meddling from China and Russia, just adding more fuel to the fire. The apparent complacency could very well destabilize not just Nigeria but the entire African continent if left unchecked. The silence is more than deafening—it’s complicit.

In a twist of events, a surprising cast of influential figures outside of traditional political spheres has taken the stage. Rapper Nicki Minaj, and even Bill Maher, have used their platforms to highlight the crisis, drawing public attention to a degree that what one might have expected from certain global institutions. Their advocacy underscores how critical this fight for freedom and safety has become. Even top athletes have spoken out, albeit those connected to the region may fear putting their own families at risk.

Amidst the turmoil, it’s somewhat reassuring that the Nigerian government has been willing to collaborate with the U.S., sharing intelligence to address terrorist threats. However, real future stability hinges on long-term solutions. There needs to be sustained protection, allowing Christians, and all civilians, a chance at safety without depending annually on foreign powers for rescue. This issue demands more than just temporary measures; it calls for a comprehensive restructuring that prioritizes security and actual development. Let’s hope concerned nations around the world follow through with decisive and enduring support.
