Uncovering Propaganda: How History’s Been Twisted

For decades now, the narrative pushed by progressive intellectuals accuses America of being the sole villain in the historical drama of slavery. This is a blatant distortion of facts, but it’s a tale they’ve told so well that even prestigious educators and supposedly knowledgeable politicians have fallen for it. The truth, inconvenient though it may be, is that slavery was a global atrocity, not a uniquely American invention. Instead of acknowledging this, certain figures prefer to propagate the myth that the United States alone birthed and nurtured this horrific institution.

A professor from the University of Wisconsin conducted a study over 11 years and found that his students held a deeply flawed understanding of slavery. They believed, overwhelmingly, that it began here in America and was practically an American phenomenon exclusive to our nation. This misguided belief underscores a trend in education today that seeks to overemphasize America’s sins while glossing over those of other countries. Ironically, this view is shared by an esteemed U.S. senator, who, despite their Ivy League education, seems to have skipped a few crucial history lessons.

Now, one might be led to think that with all this rewriting of history, Americans would easily discern the difference between historical facts and historical fiction. Yet, a poll by a mainstream publication indicated that 67% of Americans believe the legacy of slavery still affects today’s society. While there are recognitions of the scars left by slavery, the discussion about its legacy oversimplifies the complex tapestry of our nation’s past and present challenges.

Some proponents of the dominant narrative argue that slavery is so foundational to American society that moving beyond it is impossible. This, however, is one of the most cynical excuses used to keep Americans shackled to an irreversible past. It’s a convenient tool for those looking to divide rather than unite, to lecture rather than educate, and to blame rather than solve. It ignores the substantial strides our nation has made, casting aside progress for the sake of maintaining a narrative that keeps people in perpetual outrage.

It’s time to push back against these reductive narratives and reacquaint ourselves with the complicated but inclusive history of our nation. We must celebrate the ideals that define us—liberty, justice, and opportunity—while never shying away from our imperfections. It is our duty to remember that the American story, unlike the caricature presented by its harshest critics, is one of constant evolution and hope, forever striving to fulfill the founding vision.
