Unpacking the Kurds: The Backbone of Middle Eastern Power Struggles

The complex tapestry of ethnicities in Iran reveals a surprising truth: America is technically whiter than Iran is Persian. While many might assume that the Iranian populace is predominantly Persian, in reality, Persians make up only about 60 to 65% of the country’s population. The remainder consists of diverse groups, including Azerbaijanis, Kurds, Lurs, and others. This demographic nuance is crucial when understanding the dynamics in Iran, particularly concerning the long-fought struggle for Kurdish autonomy.

The Kurds, who have faced centuries of oppression, represent a significant ethnic group in Iran, with their numbers estimated to be between 25 to 35 million worldwide. They are often noted as the largest stateless population, scattered across various countries including Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. This has produced a rich cultural history interwoven with a strong desire for self-determination. Despite the diversity within the Kurdish community—including secularists and radical groups—their historical alignment with the United States during key conflicts cannot be overlooked. From the Gulf War in the early 1990s to the fight against ISIS from 2014 to 2019, the Kurds stood as allies, only to find themselves abandoned when the geopolitical winds shifted.

Currently, reports indicate that Iranian Kurds are arming themselves and preparing to cross back into Iran from Iraq. This is not merely an act of desperation but rather a calculated move fueled by a long history of betrayal and oppression. Their attempts to reclaim historic territory are seen as not only a fight for survival but also a quest for the autonomy they have long been denied. The Israeli Air Force has been actively targeting Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) bases, suggesting that a larger strategy may be underway to support Kurdish aspirations for independence by weakening Iranian control in the region.

The historical context of the Kurdish struggle highlights the ongoing conflict that has shaped their identity and aspirations. The arbitrary borders drawn in the 19th century split Kurdish populations between countries and stifled their quest for independence. Past attempts at forming an autonomous state, such as the short-lived Republic of Mahabad in 1946, were crushed swiftly, leaving a legacy of pain and a determination to fight back. The resilience of the Kurdish people is evident as they consider re-entering Iran with arms, ready to assert their rights against a government that has consistently rejected their existence.

America’s role in this narrative is particularly critical. The long history of Kurdish support for U.S. interests should compel a reassessment of how the U.S. engages with Iran and its diverse populations. The Kurds have been steadfast allies, often paying the price for misplaced trust when U.S. policies shift. As the situation evolves and Iranian Kurds gear up for potential conflict, the United States must recognize the importance of its commitments and the profound implications of historical alliances. After all, ignoring a loyal ally could lead to dangerous consequences—not just in the region, but for America’s own standing in the world stage.

Understanding this dynamic requires a clear-eyed view of the complexities of Iranian politics and the ethnic groups within it. The ongoing struggles of the Kurdish people illustrate not only their quest for recognition but the broader issues of national sovereignty and ethnic rights that resonate globally. While America enjoys its own ethnic homogeneity status, it must consider how its actions influence allies like the Kurds. In the end, one hopes that history does not repeat itself, leading to yet another betrayal; rather, that it paves the way for justice and self-determination among the Kurdish people who have long been denied both.
