In the latest episode of political theater, President Trump and Governor Gavin Newsom are engaging in a verbal sparring match that rivals any reality TV show. The President took to a stage in Kentucky, a state with a surprisingly popular Democratic governor, and decided it was a perfect opportunity to aim some verbal jabs at California’s own Gavin Newsom. Apparently, the President had a lot to say about Newsom’s cognitive abilities and alleged racism, setting the stage for a back-and-forth that has kept political analysts busy.
Trump’s critique went beyond the typical political jabs. He questioned Newsom’s mental acuity, suggesting that he isn’t sharp enough to hold high office. Of course, the President is known for his quips, but calling Newsom a “cognitive mess” was certainly more colorful than the usual mudslinging. The rally crowd in Kentucky might have been delighted, but one can’t help but wonder if this is the type of discourse people want in politics. Perhaps this is what gives politics its bad reputation, akin to a soap opera with less glamorous costumes.
Newsom didn’t take these barbs lying down. He promptly fired back on social media, mentioning his dyslexia and taking the opportunity to swing back at Trump by calling him a ‘brain dead’ politician. It’s almost like a WWE match but without the physical flying chairs. It’s amazing how quickly this has veered from political strategy to a personal feud. Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that during this attention-stealing showdown, Kentucky’s Democratic governor Andy Beshear has quietly maintained the highest approval rating among Democratic governors, sneaking in some impressive economic progress. But forget about that—it’s much more fun to watch two grown men act like teenagers.
In the fashion of politicians everywhere, both figures seem keen on keeping their names in the public eye. If Trump continues to acknowledge Newsom, it may well boost Newsom’s relevance on the national stage. It’s a strange dance of mutual benefit, where each swipe from Trump could inadvertently elevate Newsom. One might imagine other political figures, like Pete Buttigieg, wondering how they can get the same attention from Trump. They must be longing for the President’s love to boost their own standing in the strange hierarchy of political popularity.
The real twist, however, came with some serious allegations tossed around about protection of the unsavory elements of society. That’s not to mention the critique of California’s many woes, like homelessness and poverty. While Newsom is working to polish the state’s image with an expensive PR campaign, one can’t ignore the critiques of policies that have loosened restrictions on the early release of felons. Let’s just say California’s reputation has seen better days. With all this going on, the public is left to wonder if these skirmishes are a distraction from the bigger issues. But hey, at least it’s entertaining—pass the popcorn, please.
