Biden’s Latest Move Leaves Turley in Stitches

The National Football League (NFL) is under the microscope, and who would have thought it would take the Department of Justice to bring them to the spotlight? Fans everywhere have been grumbling, and it’s not just about bad calls on the field. It’s about how they need to juggle subscriptions to streaming services like Netflix and Prime just to catch their favorite teams in action. Isn’t it fun paying for more services just to watch what used to be free? Enter the DOJ investigation into the NFL’s media practices, with top brass being told to sit up and pay attention.

The issue at hand isn’t simple, of course. FCC’s Brendan Carr noted that the NFL might be teetering on the edge, risking a loss of its prized antitrust exemption. It’s the kind of benefit that keeps the gears of sports capitalism oiled, but it was historically built on the idea of sponsored telecasts on commercial television. Back in 1961, the Sports Broadcasting Act made sense when it was crafted to facilitate negotiation among teams and networks. But now, in a world awash with streaming platforms, it appears some adjustments might be overdue.

Fans were once promised that games would be accessible without hidden fees. Fast forward to today’s world, and fans are burdened with subscriptions and costs that just keep piling on. Meanwhile, the NFL claims to be laughably “pro-fan” in their efforts. If the NFL is the most fan-friendly league, then gingivitis must be too, because few people like paying more to watch their beloved pigskin get tossed around. Commissioner Roger Goodell undoubtedly takes much of the heat—as much fun as finding your way to the Super Bowl by following the light of your burning effigy. What a lark!

And don’t be fooled by the league’s noble-sounding declarations about free broadcasts. They confidently assert that 87% of games are on free broadcasts. But how many fans feel that way when every other week they’re frantically scouring for the best way to watch without breaking the bank? As fans dig deeper into their pockets, it’s clear something doesn’t add up. Maybe it’s time to make sure those numbers are right, perhaps by having Congress take a long, hard look.

Politicians in Congress have been suggested as the white knights in this debacle, poised to tackle what fans have known for far too long. Call it a modern-day monopoly, a closed market that leaves diehard fans without choices, only near-constant reminders of increasing costs. If anyone is going to hear the collective groan of frustration from fans coast to coast, it might just be Congress. Let’s hope they remember who they’re supposed to serve and not let the sheer size and profitability of the NFL turn into an insurmountable fumble in the eyes of the loyal fans.
