NYU Grads Mock Famous Author at Graduation Ceremony

It seems Jonathan Haye has sparked quite the controversy with his recent commencement address. The furor began when students at NYU protested Haye’s invitation to speak, accusing him of not representing their values. The students, who are seemingly on a relentless quest to squash any dissent from their preferred narrative, clearly weren’t thrilled with Haye’s critique of their perceived pampered mentality. At the heart of the matter is Haye’s accusation that colleges are shielding students from challenging ideas, thus promoting the coddling of America. One might argue that this trend of avoiding uncomfortable truths is leading to a widespread intellectual flabbiness among today’s youth.

Jonathan Haye, best-selling author and professor, brought forth the idea of anti-fragility, suggesting that, contrary to the careful cushioning students seem to demand, human beings grow stronger when faced with challenges, not weaker. Yet, the students at NYU appeared to equate hearing opposing viewpoints with the apocalypse, reinforcing Haye’s arguments rather than debunking them. Interestingly, while Haye spoke of students as anti-fragile, their actions seemed to ironically showcase how fragile their ideologies truly are when faced with a different perspective. It’s almost as if they are living, breathing contradictions of Haye’s speech, providing a poignant demonstration of the very point he was making.

The saga took another twist when Grayson Stevenson, the outgoing sophomore class president, argued that disinviting speakers doesn’t mean students are incapable of hearing differing opinions. Now, that’s a fascinating spin; saying that student protests against speakers are different from an outright inability to stomach opposing voices. One can’t help but chuckle at the irony — claiming that excluding Haye stems from a sense of values, while simultaneously reinforcing stereotypes of intellectual intolerance. It begs the question, if all the students’ values are monolithic, then are they really learning independently? Or does it suggest a collegiate mindset that echoes the bias their institutions allegedly promote?

Commencement speaking opportunities are a scarce platform for conservative figures. Liberal speakers reportedly outnumber their conservative counterparts six to one. Yet, despite the usual progressive speaker lineup, NYU stood firm on their decision to feature Haye. This decision deserves some recognition given how often controversy results in speakers being unceremoniously scratched from the commencement agenda. NYU’s commitment to allowing Haye’s voice to be heard is a small yet noteworthy victory for free speech advocates everywhere. It’s refreshing to see a university resist the pressure, unlike others who buckle at the first signs of discontent. It’s these rare instances where reason triumphs over mob mentality that offer a glimmer of hope for balanced discourse.

Perhaps after his address, the shaken students retreated to their “safe spaces,” seeking solace from words that dared to challenge them. Maybe one day, they will come to appreciate viewpoints that differ from their own as an opportunity for growth rather than something to censor. In the meantime, those interested in the full scope of Jonathan Haye’s educational call to arms can find his speech online. Even if it doesn’t convert the anti-Haye mob, at least they tried to withstand a dose of intellectual rigor, much like taking bitter medicine they didn’t even realize they needed.
