Iran Strikes Kuwait and Bahrain; Saudi Arabia Raises Alarm

There seems to be a lot of excitement in the Middle East these days, but not the kind that comes with palm trees and vacation getaways. Iran, always eager to stir the pot, has been up to its usual antics. This time, they’ve decided to shell military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain with ballistic missiles and drones. Fortunately, thanks to the ever-vigilant US forces, all these attempts have been thwarted successfully. The US Central Command didn’t take this lying down and decided to give Iran a little taste of self-defense over on Keshum Island. It sounds like a game of international ping-pong, but with high-stakes military hardware instead of paddles.

This mess all started earlier today when the Iranians thought it would be a splendid idea to start targeting commercial vessels in the Gulf with their drone armada. Of course, the US Navy wasn’t about to let that slide. They were more than ready, blasting away any threat – drone or otherwise. The plot thickened when Sentcom forces intercepted a rather daring blockade runner, the Batswana-flagged MT Lexi, which didn’t heed the friendly advice to turn back. You’ve got to love a situation where ignoring advice leads to Hellfire missiles through your engine room. It’s a sixth ship to face this fate, a clear lesson on why it’s not wise to test the blockade unless you’re a fan of pyrotechnics.

The Ayatollah, handy at dodging public appearances, has been quiet, leaving many to wonder if he’s been hiding in a cave or improving his looks for Pride Month. No direct sightings yet; just rumors and whispers that he might be stirring from his retreat. Instead of the resplendent fireworks expected from diplomatic negotiations, it’s more of a silent movie at present – Iran prefers to communicate through intermediaries with a fondness for holding mock talks. The Iranian bazaars may love a good haggle, but with Trump at the wheel, the US isn’t looking to walk away with an overpriced Persian rug this time.

While the US military is out flexing its might, there’s talk that Iran has been trying to cozy up to Oman, urging them to enforce tolls on the Strait of Hormuz. Naturally, this did not sit well with President Trump who decided it was high time Oman picked a side – ideally not the side housing a nuclear-aspiring regime. The global consensus against Iran’s antics is striking; even countries not exactly known for siding with the US are shaking their heads at Iran’s blockade tactics. Yet, there’s a smattering of Democrats who appear more interested in critiquing Trump’s foreign policy, suggesting he’s lost focus with an eye towards a certain neighboring northern country.

It’s a real nail-biter, this dance in the Gulf. If one had the chance to peek at the scoreboard, the US naval blockade seems to be doing its job, having turned away over 122 ships. Nevertheless, an accelerated clock ticks on, whether it’s gauged by Iran’s internal pressures or Trump’s own timeline for action. As for the mysterious Ayatollah with his alleged one leg, his ability to keep away from the public eye only casts further suspicion on Iran’s true intentions. Although the democratically-supported US response seems crystal clear: make the regime rethink its choices with strategic strikes. One can only hope that the desert swelter coupled with US resolve will nudge the Iranians towards a path of peace, albeit with some well-placed prodding.
