Finnerty: Obama Presidential Center Looks Worse Than an Airport

After a long wait of ten years, the grand opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Center has finally arrived, delighting many Democrats and sparking conversations across the nation. Standing a towering 225 feet tall, this monumental structure has officially opened its doors in Chicago. For the price of $30, visitors can stroll through a site that the media has claimed is not just a tribute to the nation’s first black president, but also a reflection of the country he represented.

Interestingly, the center seems to be dubbed the Barack Obama Presidential Center, carefully avoiding the full name of the former president, Barack Hussein Obama. It appears that the essence of that middle name might not be the most favorable for everyone, especially those on the left. Still, today’s celebration has been filled with Democrats showing their admiration for Barack, as he remains a symbol of hope and change for them, especially after a series of challenging electoral candidates like Hillary, Joe, and Kamala.

According to a recent poll, around 57% of Americans view Barack favorably. This percentage has become a talking point among supporters who are eager to showcase that Barack enjoys a higher approval than both of his predecessors. As CNN put it, this opening signifies a historic moment worth celebrating, especially amidst ongoing political disagreements in the country. Nevertheless, some skeptics can’t help but roll their eyes, pointing out the hefty price tag attached to the library – a whopping $500 million over budget and five years behind schedule.

Critics have scrutinized the long-delayed project and questioned its aesthetic appeal. Some have even claimed that they have seen airports that look more visually pleasing. To add a humorous twist, when comparing this to President Joe Biden’s struggles to raise a million dollars for his own future library, one can only imagine the stark differences in expectations. Biden’s library is suggested to be a modest addition, possibly tucked away next to a restroom on a college campus in Delaware.

One of the significant reasons for the delays and overspending on the Obama Center was President Obama’s commitment to diversity in hiring. The focus was on employing minority contractors, architects, electricians, and more. While the intention of creating a diverse workforce is admirable, the ultimate execution has raised eyebrows, with some suggesting that the impressive goal may have come at the expense of efficiency and quality. Those who took part in this ambitious project are still waiting for their payments, leaving a bittersweet taste in the mouths of the very workers Obama aimed to uplift.

In conclusion, while the Barack Obama Presidential Center is now a tangible reality, it embodies a mixed bag of emotions and opinions. Supporters cherish the opening as a monumental aspect of American history, while critics highlight the project’s financial pitfalls and hiring choices. Regardless of one’s political leanings, the library serves as a reminder of the complexity of leadership, legacy, and the ongoing discussion about what America represents today.
