In the entertaining saga of Democratic theatrics, one might have hoped for a brief intermission, but lo and behold, Hillary Clinton chose to step back into the spotlight. Recently, Hillary decided to cast a shadow on Joe Biden’s reelection plans, leaving both critics and supporters scratching their heads in bewilderment. It’s as if she awoke like a political Punxsutawney Phil, having spotted Biden as the shadow that no longer threatens her legacy. Despite a history of standing by Biden, she now argues that he has made a tremendous mistake by running for another term. One has to wonder: is she genuinely concerned for democracy, or just crafting some reality TV-level drama for her golden years?
The irony here is as thick as one could imagine. Hillary once stood steadfast behind Joe, giving him her nod of approval as he set up his lounge chair in the Oval Office. Fast forward to now, and she’s regretting the “Weekend at Bernie’s” vibe he’s bringing to the presidency. She might as well have rolled out a “Told you so” banner. It’s a classic case of supporting him when it’s politically convenient, then bemoaning him as a burden when things get tough. Perhaps this is what retirement fun looks like for some former politicians—if you’re not running for president yourself, why not criticize those who are?
Meanwhile, the banter surrounding these revelations is almost as amusing as the situation itself. Pundits humorously ponder why Hillary isn’t seeking solace in hobbies more suited to her post-political life—perhaps knitting or even roller derby. Anything, really, would be more engaging than rehashing political grievances under the guise of unsolicited advice. There’s something comfortably smug in seeing her rate others for their supposed mistakes while remaining staunchly oblivious to her own political missteps. It’s almost an art form at this point.
Hillary’s remarks also underscore what seems to be an underlying rivalry. Some argue her commentary comes from a place of pure nostalgia—a wistful longing for another go at the presidential race. Alas, there are only so many electoral blunders a person can endure, as history painfully reminds her. Hillary might secretly fancy herself the next Democratic candidate were it not for her prior shaky performances. Her rationale? She could have apparently bested Trump—again. The comedy writes itself, doesn’t it?
In the end, however, what may stand as the most amusing aspect is the growing list of Democrats lining up to bemoan Biden’s presidency. Now that Hillary has commented, others may feel empowered to do the same—albeit quietly, lest they disturb the delicate presidential apple cart. In a dazzling turn of events, Donald Trump inadvertently becomes the unsung hero preventing political calamities like the Executive Branch additions of Kamala or another Clinton campaign. And all while Democrats try to decide who’s less favored: Joe Biden, Dr. Jill, or Hillary herself. Cheers to the political plot twists only Washington can deliver, ensuring entertainment for us all in the exhilarating run to 2024.
