Green Menace: Who’s Behind Reflecting Pool’s Algae Crisis?

When it comes to preserving our national landmarks, one can’t overlook the current challenges with Washington, D.C.’s iconic reflecting pool. This historical site has seen its fair share of attempts to maintain its beauty—some successful, while others leave much to be desired. Recently, attention has turned to the issue of algae growth, which has persisted despite efforts to address it.

The heart of the problem lies within the water source. Drawing water from the nearby Potomac River, or similar bodies, naturally introduces algae into the pool. The efforts by previous administrations, including Obama’s costly renovation, inadvertently exacerbated the issue by altering the original water source. More recently, the task of managing this challenge fell to the Trump administration, which attempted to improve the pool’s appearance by draining and painting the bottom blue. However, painting the bottom of the pool was more of a cosmetic fix than a solution to the deeper problem of algae growth.

Algae in the reflecting pool is not an aesthetic issue alone; it impacts the pool’s primary goal of reflecting the surrounding monuments’ grandeur. When seen from above, a layer of algae disrupts this reflection, obstructing the view with a greenish hue, regardless of the color beneath the water. Thus, the choice of painting the bottom of the pool blue fails to mask or remove the algae visible from above.

The real solution might lie in a reconsideration of the water source or employing treatments akin to those used in recreational swimming pools, though the scale and nature of the reflecting pool present unique challenges. Using fresh, clean water and effective water treatments could be key components in addressing the algae problem. Installing barriers or implementing security measures could also help prevent vandals from introducing pollutants into the pool, which would further complicate maintenance efforts.

Looking forward, what is required are practical and sustainable solutions that respect the historical significance of the reflecting pool. Continuous investment in restoration projects, without addressing the root issues, will only lead to repetitive cycles of expenditure without tangible results. By focusing on the underlying causes and considering creative, long-term solutions, we can ensure that the reflecting pool continues to be a source of pride for generations to come. In the end, preserving our landmarks demands practical, clear-headed, and forward-thinking approaches—principles that resonate with core American values.
