DSA Co-Chair Clarifies: Is America’s ‘Destruction’ the Goal?

In a political landscape where words often carry as much weight as actions, it’s telling when a candidate celebrates a victory with phrases like “comrades” and calls for “solidarity” in the movement. It appears that the socialist wave is no longer a whisper within the Democratic Party but rather a budding tidal force that some in Colorado are cheering on with glee. When a new face, emboldened by such rhetoric, topples a long-standing Democrat who had held a congressional seat for three decades, it spotlights the shift in the Democratic Party’s identity, making it look like a melting pot for avowed socialists rather than a unified political front.

If there’s anything that catches the attention of a keen observer, it’s the unapologetic openness about intentions. There’s a certain charm, perhaps unintentionally humorous, to these declarations of taking over not just the Democratic tent but the whole campsite. This new guard seems less interested in joining the Democratic Party as we know it and more inclined to seize the reins, carrying with them a bag of ideologies that looks like something straight out of a college freshman’s dream journal. The promised rollout of Medicare for all, a radical reduction to a 32-hour workweek, housing rights as inalienable as life and liberty—all sounds as good as a fairy tale, assuming you can find the magic beans to pay for it.

For anyone keeping tabs on the shifting sands of American politics, there’s more than enough to raise an eyebrow or two—perhaps both. The platform outlined by the Democratic Socialists of America resembles a utopian wish list, sprinkled generously with calls to dissolve borders and policing, with a dash of anti-corporate rhetoric that makes Wall Street’s occupants likely to sweat bullets. This variant of politics seems more like a reenactment of historical socialism with a modern twist than any serious blueprint for a robust national framework. Some might say it seems like a strategy to achieve economic equality by dragging everyone down to the same level of mediocrity.

The real kicker comes when one considers the broader ambitions these new Democrats hint at: changing the political playing field entirely. They’re eyeing plans to alter foundational aspects of American governance, such as doing away with the Electoral College and expanding the House of Representatives in ways only FDR could dream. While some of these propositions might sound progressive to those tired of the status quo, let’s be honest—who really believes in a system where decisions about who gets what are based on the whims of what passes as ‘majority rule’ in this hypothetical democracy? Nothing quite says liberty like a mandated property seizure vote, does it?

Behind all this bravado is a notion of building on what they call the “promise of America,” turning a system they critique for favoring the rich and disenfranchising the poor, into an all-inclusive haven of equity. But one can only wonder if their plan for a utopian America involves a whole lot of dismantling before finding any tangible solutions. Democrats, or anyone within their orbit, might want to think twice before they let the fox run the henhouse, metaphorically speaking. After all, there’s a fine line between reimagining a nation and inadvertently steering it into an abyss with good intentions and dubious methods.
