Gutfeld Shocked: Is This Really Happening?

In a world that often seems to ignore common sense, Massachusetts has managed to outdo itself by leaning into one of the most controversial debates of our time—abortion—by passing a law that allows the termination of pregnancies right up until birth. Yes, you heard that right, folks: a healthy, viable baby inches away from entering the world can now be aborted if a doctor gives the thumbs-up. And in a state where left-wing policy reigns supreme, finding such a doctor likely won’t be a Herculean task.

This isn’t about preserving the life of the mother or dealing with tragic fetal anomalies. No, it seems to provide carte blanche for personal discretion, replacing concrete gestational limits with a squishy standard of “professional judgment.” Now, if last week’s political twists and turns were any indication, the bill is being hailed as a massive victory for freedom—specifically, the freedom to dispose of a life if it becomes inconvenient. Yikes! If this sounds like something out of a dystopian novel, that’s because it practically is.

It’s amusing—if darkly so—how the supporters of this law trumpet it as a step forward for women’s rights while ignoring the most vulnerable parties: the unborn children who are being denied their shot at life. The gleeful applause at the signing ceremony seemed more befitting a prize lottery announcement than a law that could lead to the termination of viable babies. Yet here we are, cheering for what many see as a signal of moral decline clothed as progress.

The irony is rich. Many of the same folks who see no problem with this law are vociferous defenders of the lives of convicted criminals or endangered species. But when it comes to an unborn child, well, suddenly it’s open season. They’ll rally against capital punishment for adults who have committed heinous crimes but support the ultimate penalty for a baby that hasn’t even drawn its first breath. Makes one wonder if they’ve got their priorities backward.

The real kicker is the profound societal shift this law symbolizes. It’s not just about setting a dangerous precedent where life is treated as an option, not an inherent right—it’s also about how we’re being pressured to celebrate it as though we’ve achieved some great humanitarian milestone. There used to be a time when we aimed for a society where abortion was “rare but safe,” and sensible minds set boundaries. But it seems the brakes have come off entirely, and we’re hurtling down a slippery slope toward who knows what. If that’s what progress looks like nowadays, maybe it’s time to rethink what we’re progressing toward.
