Keane: Biden’s Border Crisis is Spinning Out of Control

In the latest installment of geopolitical drama in the Middle East, Iran has made bold claims about its dominion over the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically crucial waterway. Iran’s assertions come amid a heated war of words with the United States, claiming that the U.S. military’s statements about operational effectiveness in the region are desperately far from reality. This skirmish of words adds to the already tense atmosphere as Iran tries to flex its muscles in the face of enduring economic and diplomatic pressures.

From the American perspective, the U.S. seems to have a good handle on things, at least if you have faith in the evaluations of seasoned military minds like that of the retired four-star General Jack Keane. The Americans have reportedly blockaded parts of the strait, effectively cutting off Iranian ports, inflicting damage to several vessels, and shooing away a fleet-sized number of ships like pesky flies at a barbecue. Add to that a demining operation and it paints a picture of order and control that is unmistakably red, white, and blue.

So, what’s Iran really controlling? Well, they seem to be indulging in a bit of psychological warfare. Imagine the effect of constant intimidation on ship captains who might begin to doubt if the U.S. Navy is really capable of ensuring their oil-tanker odyssey through the southern route is as smooth as a patriotic parade. And while these captains’ fears might sway like a ship at sea, the U.S. is seeing an uptick in the number of vessels successfully making their transit. Ships are navigating stealthily, like teenagers sneaking out of their bedrooms after curfew, aided by night as their cloak.

Iran appears to have a two-pronged plan in this high-stakes maritime chess game. First, to drag out the situation under the belief that they can outlast U.S. sanctions and that time itself is on their side. Second, to potentially stir up trouble as mid-term elections loom closer, in hopes of making things politically dicey for the current U.S. administration. They seem to have forgotten that Presidents tend to have a penchant for reacting strongly, especially when it comes to foreign threats, regardless of what political games are unfolding on home turf.

As the world’s attention remains fixed on the Persian Gulf, it’s clear that the situation is evolving faster than a middle-school rumor. One wrong move or miscalculation could spark a reaction like matches to gasoline. The U.S. is not merely watching from the sidelines; they are very much a player on this figurative chessboard. Whether this is a game of wits or a waiting game remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: neither side seems ready to let the other have the last laugh just yet.
