Liberals’ List of ‘Renamed’ Classics Will Leave You Shaking Your Head

In a surprising twist that has left many scratching their heads, former President Donald Trump recently announced that Lake Ontario has officially been renamed to Lake America. While some may see this as a radical move, others are finding humor in the situation, taking it all in stride. After all, as they say, “If you can’t laugh at the absurdity of politics, what can you laugh at?”

This situation brings to mind a particular event during Barack Obama’s presidency when he decided to rename Mount McKinley, the tallest peak in North America, to its original Native American name, Denali. The media celebrated Obama’s action, showering him with praise and turning the renaming into a feel-good story that emphasized honoring Native cultures. But let’s not forget that Mount McKinley was named after a Republican president, William McKinley, who tragically met his end due to an assassin’s bullet. The history of the name seemed to take a backseat to the narratives that had to be spun at that time.

Fast forward to today, and Trump’s quirky proclamation has ignited a firestorm of reactions. Lake Ontario, which many have grown comfortable with over the years, has suddenly morphed into Lake America on Google Earth and beyond. The humor in this is not lost, especially when considering how future Democrats might roll their eyes at having to switch it back to its original name. One can just imagine the conversations in the White House about how embarrassing it would be for a president from the opposing party to restore a “lost” name.

The frenzy surrounding this name change highlights a broader issue of what some view as a glaring double standard in media and political reactions. The left seems to celebrate name changes when it suits them, like the renaming of Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day or the transformation of the Washington Redskins into the Washington Commanders. Yet, when the right makes a similar move, they are often met with outrage and incredulity. It makes one wonder: is it solely about the name, or is it more about which side of the political line is wielding the power to change it?

While some individuals may think renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America is trivial, for many on the right, it serves as a moment of levity in the often serious and tense political climate. It’s as though Trump is waving a flag to signal the chasm that lies between the reactions of conservatives and liberals concerning such symbolic gestures. The absurdity is certainly present, prompting one to ask whether anyone will actually get upset about a lake name when there are much larger issues at play.

In the grand scheme, politics can often feel like one big comedy show, and this latest episode is no exception. As America navigates through its quirky political landscape, Lake America may just become another talking point in the ongoing dialogue about what it means to honor history, culture, and the narratives that citizens choose to embrace. After all, if nothing else, a little humor and a new lake name serve as a reminder that change—no matter how whimsical—is always in the air.
