Carl Higbie Calls for Sweeping Cuts to Ineffective Government Jobs

The news of the federal government shrinking its workforce has sparked quite a conversation, reminiscent of last year’s drama, but this time, it seems to have a more serious tone. The number of federal employees is reportedly at its lowest since 1966, which some folks might say is a fact worth celebrating. If there’s one thing taxpayers like, it’s the idea of fewer bureaucrats on the payroll. After all, when it comes to federal employment, who wouldn’t agree that two million too many might be a bit on the high side?

Back in August 1966, the federal job market bloomed to a hefty 2.7 million employees. Since then, there have been some ups and downs, but nothing prepared the public for the rapid decline that took place in the last two years of Donald Trump’s presidency. Enter President Biden in 2021, who started his term with a surge of hiring that seemed aimed at bouncing back from the private sector woes prompted by prolonged COVID-19 lockdowns. In his first year, Biden brought in around 12,000 new federal positions, followed by another 18,700 the next year. This seemed to set the stage for an expansive federal job market.

However, this hiring spree didn’t end there. In a twist that could only make one raise an eyebrow, the administration added a staggering 85,000 new jobs one year and then 60,000 the following year. Critics argue that these are not replacements but rather entirely new positions created for no particular reason other than the government’s newfound zeal to bulk up its ranks. It raises the question: how many federal workers does it truly take to keep a toaster from burning toast?

Of course, when the topic of cutting down on government jobs comes up, the left often raises an alarm, claiming it to be a direct attack on organized labor. They argue that these federal employees are vital to the country’s functionality, yet many taxpayers might disagree—drawing a line between those who produce and those who consume. The reality is that many see government employees as enjoying a cushy life at the expense of the hardworking American families—especially when one looks at the average salary of federal workers, coming in at a whopping $112,000 a year. That sum doesn’t even include the lavish benefits and retirement packages that could make even a banker blush.

After all, the average American in the private sector is earning about half of that. Suppose you work 20 years for the federal government; you could be eligible for a generous pension, allowing you to retire at a sprightly age of 40. That raises some eyebrows when considering all those tax dollars that keep flowing to support such arrangements. If the Trump administration’s cuts resulted in around 270,000 fewer employees and subsequently saved taxpayers a staggering $30 billion annually, you begin to wonder if perhaps less really could be more.

Regardless of where one stands on this shrinking workforce issue, it is clear that the debate over the size and effectiveness of federal employment is a hot topic. With arguments flying back and forth, one thing is certain: taxpayers are left scratching their heads over whose interests truly matter. While some glued to their television screens scream about the need for more help from a bloated government, others raise a glass in celebration of leaner times ahead. In this tug-of-war, it seems the scales will keep tipping, and the discourse should only heat up as more people begin to realize just how much they are paying for the privilege of having so many federal employees.
