Alaska’s November Vote: A Chance to Dismantle Ranked-Choice Chaos

**Alaska’s Critical Vote: A Chance to Freeze Ranked-Choice Voting**

This November, all eyes should be on Alaska, and not just for the stunning natural beauty or fresh salmon fishing. No, this time it’s all about a little thing called ranked-choice voting (RCV). As political chatter fills the air with concerns over democracy being in trouble, it’s important to take a step back and consider what could potentially mess with our electoral process. And, folks, ranked-choice voting might just take the cake.

Ranked-choice voting flips the traditional voting system on its head. Usually, if a candidate gets the most votes, they win, plain and simple. But under this RCV system, voters are tasked with ranking candidates by preference. So, if no one collects a majority of the votes—in the typical requirement of 50%—the candidate with the fewest votes gets kicked to the curb. They are then eliminated, and their votes are magically redistributed to the second-choice candidates. This continues until someone finally breaks the 50% mark. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, it’s not exactly what most people signed up for when they cast their ballots.

The use of ranked-choice voting has spread across several states and localities—hello Maine, Alaska, Washington D.C., and others! It’s even popped up in presidential primaries, giving Democrats a new playground to experiment with their candidates. However, debate surrounds this method, particularly the strange results it can produce. Just picture this: in 2022, Alaska, typically known as a red state, elected a Democrat to the House of Representatives—an outcome that would have likely gone the other way in a standard voting scenario. Talk about turning the tables!

Critics of RCV argue it can easily be gamed, suggesting that voters may intentionally waste their second-choice votes to strategically impact the election outcome. That’s exactly what just happened in the recent Alaska primary, where some non-serious candidates were backed with sneaky ads, leading to confusion over votes. With ballot counting being a snail-paced endeavor in Alaska, thanks to numerous candidate options, this system can lead to what is humorously dubbed “candidate fatigue” among voters—something they never knew they signed up for.

Advocates for ranked-choice voting tend to lean toward the far left and see it as a way to showcase candidates who might otherwise go unnoticed in a straightforward election. They’ll argue it benefits up-and-coming politicians and adds more options for the voters. Interestingly, in a city like New York, RCV reportedly helped elevate some lesser-known candidates to victory. But therein lies the problem; it raises the stakes and calls into question the integrity of voting–SO, if you’re already raising eyebrows, imagine how voters in places like Montana might react to this system coming their way.

Let’s take a moment to be thankful for the chance Alaska has this November: a referendum to ditch ranked-choice voting entirely. If citizens in the Last Frontier show up in droves with a clear message, they might just rescue American democracy and return to a voting system that everyone can understand. After all, democracy should be straightforward, not a high-stakes game of musical chairs. Here’s hoping the people of Alaska recognize the importance of their decision and, with a collective thumbs down to RCV, help to preserve the integrity of elections across the nation.
