Amazon Cargo Jet Crash Causes Chaos at Miami Airport

In an age where you’d think we could at least get a plane to land without skidding off the runway, today’s drama at Miami International Airport unfolded like a scene from a blockbuster movie. Sadly, it wasn’t scripted, and the people involved weren’t paid actors. At around 2:00 p.m. Eastern time, an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane, the Boeing 767—because small planes are for the weak, of course—overshot its designated landing area, triggering chaos of epic proportions right off one of America’s busiest airspaces.

As if airport travel wasn’t already a test of patience, travelers today got an extra dose of excitement. Thick, ominous clouds of smoke began billowing from the plane, providing an unwelcome diversion for those waiting for luggage or sipping overpriced coffee. Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue were quickly on sight with over 60 fire units because, let’s face it, when a massive plane kisses a few vehicles and causes a fire, you don’t skimp on emergency response.

Now, if folks thought this event couldn’t possibly be more inconvenient, they were sorely mistaken. The airport was brought to a screeching halt, and with it, all air traffic. Mothers trying to get their toddlers to grandma’s house, business folks hurried to secure deals—everyone’s plans went up in smoke. Travelers could only marvel at the dedication of the emergency crews tackling the flames. It’s truly a marvel how they managed it so quickly, considering that usually, putting on socks in the morning feels like fighting a raging inferno.

One can’t help but notice how remarkably close the airport lies to major highways, like 826 and 836, which were also shut down during this fiasco. No biggie, just a slight disruption to the logistics of modern life. As they say, it’s the unpredictability that keeps life exciting—or utterly frustrating, depending on who you ask. The sight of possibly impacted cars added a touch of danger to an already precarious scene. Perhaps the design plan was to add entertainment value to mundane road travel. If so, mission accomplished.

The incident remains under investigation by the competent officials who will hopefully enlighten us on how a cargo flight from Puerto Rico to Miami could go so spectacularly off course upon arrival. Until then, the rest of us can only speculate—and wait for our next Amazon package with fingers crossed that it wasn’t on that plane. Meanwhile, the rest of Miami International goes into damage control, and travelers hunker down for what will surely be more delays, missed connections, and possibly another free hotel night courtesy of the aviation industry’s latest escapade.
