Beware Voters: Abigail Spanberger’s Bait and Switch Tactic Exposed

**Virginia’s Bait-and-Switch: The Rise of a Taxing Governor**

When Virginians cast their ballots last November, they envisioned a government focused on affordability and centrist values. Enter Abigail Spanberger, the newly elected governor, who campaigned like a moderate Democrat but, just two months into her term, is displaying tactics reminiscent of a different agenda. It’s like a political magic trick, leaving voters wondering if they’ve been part of a clever bait-and-switch operation.

During her campaign, Spanberger’s constant mantra was “affordability.” In fact, her aides lost track of how many times she mentioned it, highlighting her focus on curbing costs for everyday Virginians. With this appealing message, she secured a double-digit victory, leading many to believe they were ushering in a cost-cutting leader. However, many are now raising their eyebrows as they witness a far different reality unfold. Instead of being the moderating force she promised, Spanberger is leading a Democratic trifecta that has introduced a staggering array of over 50 new taxes and tax increases within just a few weeks of her administration.

These tax proposals cover a wide range of everyday activities and transactions that Virginians participate in regularly. From dog walking to Uber rides, every aspect of life seems to be a potential target for new levies. Not stopping at small increments, Spanberger’s administration is looking to add two new income tax brackets, with rates as high as 10% on incomes over $1 million. This puts Virginia on a potentially treacherous road, aligning it with high-tax states like California and New York. Meanwhile, neighboring states like West Virginia are moving in the opposite direction by phasing out their income taxes entirely. Talk about a competitive disadvantage!

Spanberger’s approach to energy policy is equally perplexing. After her predecessor exited the regional greenhouse gas initiative to keep utility costs down, Spanberger is set on rejoining. This cap-and-trade program, which comes with about a $550 million carbon tax, is said to help combat climate change. Yet, by doing so, she simultaneously asserts that Virginians will see relief on energy costs. This contradiction has many scratching their heads, wondering how such opposing promises can coexist.

Despite Spanberger not endorsing every single tax proposal from her fellow Democratic legislators, the overall direction of her administration is clear: a bigger, more expensive government. Alongside proposed new taxes, alarming trends are also emerging, as trial lawyers push for legislation that could create a less business-friendly environment in the state. Rising legal costs could undermine small businesses and further stifle economic growth—something Virginians definitely did not sign up for.

As Spanberger sets her sights on larger political ambitions, many wonder if she will continue to steer away from the moderate approach that earned her votes. Her decision to take on a prominent role in delivering the Democratic response to President Trump’s State of the Union address signals that she has her eyes toward the 2028 presidential race. This could put increasing pressure on her to cater to the party’s far-left factions, further distancing her from the moderate views that attracted her support in the first place. With a surplus of $2.7 billion, it raises the question: why is there a need for more taxes? The answer might be less about fiscal responsibility and more about a leftward shift that Virginians weren’t prepared for.

As time unfolds, it will be interesting to see how Virginians respond to the new reality of their government. Have they unknowingly elected a socialist in moderate clothing, or will Spanberger revert back to the responsible governance they were promised? Ultimately, the messages coming from Richmond may leave many feeling like they’ve been played for a fool in the political game—a feeling few voters appreciate.
