Biden Admin Escalates Pressure Tactics on Iran

In the lively world of international oil politics, the Strait of Hormuz stands out as a key battleground — or perhaps, a theater of the absurd, where the wordy theatrics of global leaders unfold. Recently, the United States and Iran have been hampering each other with competing claims about who actually controls this critical artery for global oil transport. Former President Donald Trump has boldly proclaimed on social media that the U.S. holds the reins over the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran assertively countered that it, indeed, governs the strait securely. It seems they’re engaged in a geopolitical version of the game “who controls the remote,” but with far higher stakes.

Of course, while politicians exchange jibes, the situation on the ground depicts a different story — or at sea, depending on how one looks at it. The reality is that Iran has caused significant disruptions to oil trade in this vital channel. There are reports of a clever maneuver by some ships that sneak oil out of the strait by simply turning off their transponders, like a stealthy teenager evading a curfew. But the undeniable impact is felt at gas stations around the globe, where rising prices remind one that global trade isn’t running as smoothly as planned.

The Trump administration finds itself in a bit of a pickle. Their strategic objective, to strike a better bargain than the widely criticized JCPOA, remains elusive as ever. The need to deal effectively with Iran’s dicey nuclear ambitions and their unsettling support for proxy terrorist groups looms large. While the administration has degraded Iranian military and naval assets impressively, getting Iran to negotiate earnestly seems akin to squeezing water from a stone.

President Trump’s choice to put the military action on pause in favor of imposing economic pressures is a gamble — a “war of economic attrition,” some might say. Iran’s economy is suffering, and its currency is taking an express elevator downwards. However, as Iran’s missile capabilities remain scattered throughout the country like rebellious weeds, the administration must consider carefully whether to hit the “military strikes” button again. One could assume their intelligence community is undoubtedly burning the midnight oil to determine the repercussions of each potential action.

So, what’s the Trump playbook’s endgame? Looking to the Israeli model of periodically “mowing the lawn” by wiping out threats when they inevitably reappear, the U.S. might learn a thing or two. The balance between sending troops abroad and managing other worldwide commitments remains a tightrope walk of its own. As the world watches this geopolitical chess match, the Trump administration is tasked with figuring out which pieces to move — or remove — in a scenario where checkmate can mean a lot more than just winning a game.
