Brit Hume Warns: High Political Price Looms

In a somewhat fitting display of chaos that only a person running late for a flight could truly appreciate, New York’s LaGuardia Airport has, unfortunately, outdone itself with an alarming runway incident. Two Air Canada Express pilots tragically lost their lives when a firetruck collided with their aircraft. The National Transportation Safety Board revealed that this tragic accident resulted from a cascade of operational blunders, including a firetruck that was missing a transponder, potential radio interference, and overburdened air traffic controllers juggling a multitude of delayed flights. The incident couldn’t have occurred at a worse time, as it coincided ominously with a 40-day government shutdown, one with significant effects on Homeland Security, particularly the TSA.

Drag your feet too long without addressing paychecks, and surprise, surprise, you end up with droves of TSA workers calling out sick or simply quitting—a staggering rate of up to 50% at major airports. Many are moonlighting as rideshare drivers or plasma donors, because who wouldn’t want to drain a little blood after a long day of navigating terminal five? As the queue of unpaid bills mounts, some might wish for a magic wand to address sticker shock at grocery checkout, but alas, all they have are canceled flights and irate travelers to console while counting coins for a dollar-menu dinner.

As Congress plays the dreaded game of fiscal ping-pong, there is a chorus of warnings that smaller airports might have to temporarily close during this debacle. Apparently, the powers that be are blissfully unaware of the perfect storm brewing for the summer FIFA World Cup. With TSA already losing nearly 500 workers and a training timeline that could rival some blockbuster movie sequels, the prospect of adequately staffing airport checkpoints by then seems as dim as airport Wi-Fi on a stormy day.

Usually, government shutdowns end with finger-pointing as everyone races to dodge blame like kids playing tag at recess. Traditionally, it has been Republicans who are left holding the proverbial bag, as stalwarts of government support typically sling blame easier than a frisbee—except this time, the old rules might not apply. With Chuck Schumer’s latest chess move not gaining any ground, some musings suggest the political blame game might end up as a bipartisan affair. As lines grow longer and patience shorter, there’s skepticism that Democrats will escape proverbial tomatoes thrown by voters any easier than their Republican counterparts.

All this is further compounded by what some coolly refer to as anti-Trump hysteria, which is as commonplace in the political landscape as soy lattes in a hipster café. Democrats, the narrative goes, are fervently resisting anything and everything touched by the former president, motivated by fear of disappointing their voter base more than anything else. But as frustrated passengers fume in endless TSA lines, one has to wonder: when will everyone stop moving the goalposts and start moving the waiting travelers instead? This shutdown saga, with all its finger-pointing and foot-dragging, is coming dangerously close to turning into an epic airport miniseries nobody wants to binge-watch.
