The facility sits on 39 square miles of swampland filled with alligators and dangerous wildlife. State officials say this natural barrier helps keep detainees from trying to escape. The location also gets hit by hurricanes, which encourages people to leave on their own rather than stay and face deportation.
President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited the facility when it opened on July 3rd. Trump praised the compound and said it might be as good as the real Alcatraz prison.
