In today’s world, it appears that the term “treason” is tossed around as casually as a baseball in a little league game. The latest alleged whistleblower has taken center stage, and the deep state is once again under scrutiny. Todd Blanche, the U.S. Deputy Attorney General, has firmly affirmed the Department of Justice’s readiness to address this leak fiasco with all seriousness it deserves. One can almost envision the DOJ brandishing its proverbial pitchforks ready to charge against this heinous act that threatens national security.
Blanche made it crystal clear that the previous administration, which seemed to treat whistleblowers with kid gloves, is no longer a hurdle thanks to a reversal by the Obama administration. Now, there’s nothing standing in the way of a rigorous investigation, ensuring that leaks done to undermine the sitting administration and our military are swiftly stomped out. After all, who needs the alleged truth when it’s wrapped in an agenda of chaos and harm against the president?
The assertion that this could be treasonous, with suggestions that our adversaries like Iran might have their ears perked up waiting to pounce, is no laughing matter. The Secretary of Defense is apparently spending more time firefighting unnecessary news leaks rather than doing what they’re paid to do – protect America. Everyone knows that the recent mission was nothing short of miraculous. Still, instead of celebrating victory, the top brass must fend off misguided reports that only serve to tarnish our country’s image.
Laura, ever the skeptic of media ethics, points out the inevitable uproar that might arise from the usual suspects at the media outlets about alleged attacks on the First Amendment. But what if, gasp, a member of Congress is behind the curtains of this leak? Now, there’s a cliffhanger. Is immunity from legal scrutiny part of their benefits package? Blanche is not aware of any golden cloak that shields one from culpability when flinging classified information into the public arena, whether it’s to our beloved newspapers or anywhere else. If such immunity does exist, it’s certainly news to him and perhaps should be news to the American people too. It’s high time accountability took the front seat, for every branch of government, regardless of its rank or role.
