El Salvador’s Anti-Gang Crusade: Hundreds May Be Wrongfully Arrested | WSJ


El Salvador jailed more than 66,000 people in a crackdown on gangs last year, giving it the world’s highest incarceration rate. The country’s president, Nayib Bukele, spearheaded a policy to jail gang members as the country’s murder rate reached one of the highest in the world.

WSJ traveled to San Salvador to explore how the push to end violent crime is affecting communities as rights groups say thousands are wrongfully held.
