Ex-DHS Insider Warns: Radicalization Thrives in America

In the age of 24/7 news cycles and endless political bickering, Americans are once again reminded of the stark realities of domestic extremism and the urgent need for robust homeland security. Recent attacks in Michigan and Virginia underscore the ongoing threats our nation faces, all while political games in Congress threaten the very agencies tasked with keeping us safe. At the center of this turmoil sits the Department of Homeland Security—unfortunately now part of a political stalemate that has left it unfunded for over a month, like a car left unattended with the engine running.

The attack at a Detroit area synagogue, deemed a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community, reminds us yet again of the venom of anti-Semitism that persists in our society. The sinister connection in this case, with the attacker’s brother previously a Hezbollah commander, adds an international twist that is as chilling as it is alarming. It is disheartening to consider that a classroom filled with children narrowly escaped what could have been an even greater tragedy.

Meanwhile, across the country in Virginia, Old Dominion University faced its own moment of terror. A shooter with ties to ISIS, another testament to lone-wolf radicalization, claimed one life and wounded others. The quick response by students to subdue the attacker shows American resilience, but also highlights the high stakes every community must now prepare for. Perhaps they have learned from countless drills and school assemblies on what to do when chaos rains down. One can only hope Congress is taking notes as well.

Yet, instead of united action, we see a Congress content with engaging in partisan grandstanding over crucial security funding. It’s almost poetic how a stalemate over ICE funding becomes the principal argument, like a dog stubbornly guarding an empty food bowl while the real threats gnaw at the nation’s edges. Democrats have been accused of holding DHS funding hostage, while Americans wonder if their representatives understand the breadth of the department’s responsibilities. Sure, immigration is a hot political potato, but leaving cybersecurity, the Coast Guard, Secret Service, and other critical sectors under-resourced is akin to throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Former homeland security advisers, like Charles Marino, remind us that while law enforcement is well-equipped to sniff out organized terror cells, it’s the lone wolves—those radicalized within our own borders—that pose the greatest threat. Radical ideologies now simmer online and even in our own cities, thanks in part to border policies that some argue have allowed extremist ideologies to fester at home. It paints a rather dire picture, doesn’t it? Much like trying to hunt for a needle in a haystack while the haystack itself is trying to escape.

In the midst of these challenges, the call for an end to political brinkmanship could not be more critical. It’s time for Congress to put aside the partisan posturing and ensure the Department of Homeland Security has the funding and resources it needs to protect American lives. Yes, immigration issues need addressing, but not at the expense of a nation’s safety net. The clock is ticking, and while political leaders debate, the threats keep evolving. Perhaps it’s time for Congress to wake up and smell the coffee—before it’s too late.
