In a familiar yet vexing twist, President Trump is bringing attention to the alarming issue of migrant crime, spotlighting recent tragic cases that add fuel to an already intense debate. A particularly gruesome incident involves a Haitian migrant in Florida, now facing deportation after allegedly committing a brutal murder. While the crime is unspeakable, what’s more shocking is the continued reluctance of the Democratic Party to acknowledge the link between lax border policies and these preventable tragedies. President Trump, never one to hold back, has used Truth Social to underscore his belief that Democrats, if given the chance, would turn the U.S. into a welcome haven for criminals.
Enter Laura Reese, former chief of staff at DHS and now with the Heritage Foundation. Her insights are uncomfortably straightforward, emphasizing the need for mass deportations—a cornerstone of President Trump’s campaign and presidency. Reese argues that Americans shouldn’t have to wait for these so-called “deportable aliens” to commit more crimes before becoming a priority for removal. Worksite enforcement and addressing visa overstays should also be part of this all-encompassing strategy. Apparently, common sense isn’t a Democrat strong suit, considering their track record of cuddling up to sanctuary policies and shrugging off crime related to illegal immigration.
Speaking of dysfunction, let’s turn to Virginia. Despite stern insistence from the acting ICE director for cooperation, the state’s Governor, Abigail Spanberger, seems more interested in avoiding the issue than addressing it. It’s a perplexing stance, especially given the repeated occurrences of tragic incidents involving illegal immigrants right on her doorstep. One would think a governor would want to actively prevent crimes such as this, but perhaps priorities are different in the world of political expediency.
Furthermore, the latest ordeal of a government shutdown hangs like a dark cloud, all courtesy of the Democrats’ stubborn targeting of ICE funding. Senator Lindsey Graham has boldly proclaimed a plan to fund ICE and the Border Patrol through the end of Trump’s presidency—even if it means bypassing Democrats altogether. The continual reluctance of anyone in the blue corner to support border funding is laughably absurd. One almost wonders if Democrats realize what message this sends to American citizens who expect to feel safe in their own country.
The entire scenario is a dramatic display of priorities clearly gone astray. With rising crime linked to those who should have been deported, a government shutdown over ICE funding, and political leaders who would rather look the other way, Americans are understandably frustrated. Laura Reese, now with the Heritage Foundation, sums it up well: it’s time to enforce the laws and protect the public. It’s time for politicians to recognize that playing fast and loose with public safety isn’t going unnoticed. You might just say it’s about time they read the room.
