Gianluigi Aponte’s Bold Move to Dominate the Supertanker Industry

In the world of shipping, a fascinating game of Monopoly seems to be underway, and it’s not your average collection of properties. This time, it’s about the high-seas business of supertankers, and one name stands out like a beacon: Gianluigi Aponte. This wealthy shipping tycoon, known for his impressive $43.8 billion net worth, appears to be orchestrating a strategic acquisition through the South Korean company Sinokor Merchant Marine. What began as a simple acquisition spree is turning into a grand tale of maritime investment that has everyone talking.

Sinokor Merchant Marine, a relatively young player at just 36 years old, has shifted gears from its usual container shipping to diving headfirst into the supertanker market. The waters became turbulent in December when Sinokor began quietly amassing a fleet of very large crude carriers (VLCCs). By January, the buzz reached a fever pitch, as reports emerged claiming Sinokor was on a buying spree like no other. Industry insider, Nikolas Sacos, noted that the company was “going berserkly” trying to purchase every ship in sight, and he wasn’t wrong. By the end of January, Sinokor had spent over $2.5 billion acquiring 35 tankers, and that number skyrocketed to $3.3 billion for at least 60 ships by March.

But what’s really going on beneath the surface? Behind Sinokor’s aggressive purchasing behavior lies a web that seems to connect back to Aponte. Although the relationship between Aponte and Sinokor remains shrouded in secrecy, several sources point out that Aponte’s Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) may be the financial powerhouse backing Sinokor’s bold moves. Mystery shrouds the ownership of the 60 ships, as investigations reveal that many are owned by companies bearing the name “O’Brien” followed by a number. This peculiar naming might suggest a connection to Aponte’s investments, particularly as one of his cousins, Mario Aponte, is tied to these entities.

Diving deeper into the maritime records confirmed some speculation, revealing that a significant chunk of Sinokor’s massive fleet might actually come from financing linked to Aponte’s web of companies. With 31 ships ultimately connected to “O’Brien” entities registered in Panama, there’s more than meets the eye. Corporate records indicate that Mario Aponte is the president of several of these companies, which only thickens the plot. Reports even show that in a very short window, 18 companies were incorporated in Panama, all connected to the Aponte family—talk about smooth sailing!

If Aponte indeed has ties to the majority of the tankers acquired by Sinokor, then that solidifies the duo’s position as titans of the seas. Together, Sinokor and MSC now control a whopping 76 supertankers valued at an eye-popping $6.7 billion. This encompasses about 8% of the total supertanker fleet worldwide, with competitors guessing that the ownership might be even higher when the records are all lined up. Sinokor’s control extends even further, as competitor Okeanis Eco Tankers estimates they command 17% of the total fleet and an impressive 39% of the spot fleet.

As this maritime chess game unfolds, the industry watches with keen interest. Despite the ambiguity threading through these acquisitions, one thing is clear: Gianluigi Aponte’s influence is profound, potentially reshaping the supertanker landscape while Sinokor Merchant Marine aims for the stars. The seas might be calm for now, but only time will tell how these tides will turn in the world of shipping.
