GOP’s Nancy Mace Urges Unity for Nation’s Safety

In the midst of yet another partial government shutdown, the political scene is as divided as ever, particularly over the funding of the Department of Homeland Security and the ongoing debates about Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE. Democrats are making noise about wanting significant reforms, but it seems they can’t quite unify behind a solid game plan. Their lack of consensus has the potential to become a heavy anchor, dragging on any forward momentum. Meanwhile, President Trump maintains that discussions on reforming ICE are soon on the horizon, brushing off Democratic disarray with the characteristic confidence of someone who believes he’s already addressed the country’s law enforcement and economic woes.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries boldly declared that Democrats would not support Republican efforts to reopen the government, apparently trying to sound tough for the home audience. Yet, the reality is the Democrats find themselves in a bit of a pickle, ideologically torn over how to approach the conversation about ICE. They want drastic changes, but unsurprisingly, their bold proclamations don’t quite materialize into substantial power moves. After all, the only thing rising faster than the division within the Democratic ranks is voter concern about ICE’s methods, according to some new polling data.

On the Republican side, leaders like Congresswoman Nancy Mace are optimistic about pulling the pieces together swiftly. She asserts that Republicans are the ones making concrete efforts to secure the safety of communities by supporting federal officers and maintaining robust homeland security measures. While Democrats fuss and fumble with talk of reforms, Republicans stand firm on bolstering law enforcement. After all, isn’t it the GOP’s job to ensure that the nation’s laws — even those that aren’t politically popular — are respected and enforced?

Making sure that the worst criminals are deported seems a shared goal, or at least it should be. Fortunately, some Republicans are promoting practical measures to ensure the deportation of those who really shouldn’t be here: the so-called “worst of the worst.” Yet, it’s baffling that there are voices on the left protesting these deportations. Really, who in their right mind openly campaigns to keep violent offenders around, as the Congresswoman points out? Instead of wasting energy on questionable demonstrations, the focus should squarely remain on safety — not just of citizens, but of officers who put their lives on the line.

To further spice up the mix, while our political leaders are bickering over ICE, Mother Nature decided to throw a real snowball down in the Carolinas. Typically unaccustomed to winter chaos, regions like South Carolina find themselves literally stranded without salt for icy roads. But ever resilient, Congresswoman Mace reminds everyone to make the most of it — perhaps enjoy some snow day fun with the kids. Hopefully, once the snow clears, lawmakers will also clear their heads and get back to work on the critical issues, ensuring that the fiery zeal for reform doesn’t turn into a meltdown of unproductive political theatre.
