Indicted AG Exploits Rally to Fundraise and Dodge Accountability

New York Attorney General Letitia James made a defiant, highly publicized appearance at a Zohran Mamdani campaign rally after she was hit with a federal indictment — a spectacle the left tried to spin into a show of solidarity for the political class. Voters deserve to know that this was not a humble court appearance but a staged political rally, where an indicted public official was given a hero’s welcome instead of the sober accountability the law demands.

The charges against James are serious: a federal grand jury in Virginia returned an indictment accusing her of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution over the purchase and characterization of a Virginia property. Whether you think the case will ultimately prevail in court, the fact remains that a top state official is facing federal criminal accusations — a matter that should soberly concern every citizen and should not be turned into a campaign photo-op.

At the Manhattan rally, James spoke with obvious passion and received ovations from the crowd, leaning into claims that the indictment is politically motivated and framed as retaliation by the Trump movement. It’s no surprise she’s calling the charges “baseless” while simultaneously using the podium to fundraise and rally support — the old playbook of turning potential legal peril into political capital.

Conservative commentator Dave Rubin picked up on the spectacle and shared a direct-message clip highlighting what many normal Americans found alarming: Zohran Mamdani, a self-styled democratic socialist and the rally’s host, leading the crowd in an odd and aggressive chant that underscores how radical elements are now normalized on the left. Rubin’s clip isn’t mainstream-media spin; it’s the raw footage that shows the tone and tenor of the event, and it’s the kind of footage voters should see before making judgments about who to trust with city power.

This is not an isolated curiosity. Mamdani has a record of leading confrontational chants — including resurfaced videos of him leading BDS chants and defending rhetoric linked to the phrase “globalize the intifada” — behavior that many New Yorkers find alarming and incompatible with the responsibilities of city leadership. When a candidate repeatedly courts radical slogans and then turns around to host an indicted attorney general, it raises obvious questions about judgment, alliances, and priorities.

Democrats will try to gaslight the electorate by insisting this is all about protecting a woman of color from a politicized system, but facts matter more than identity politics. Accountability is blind to party, and every voter should be wary of a coalition that rallies behind a public official facing federal charges while elevating a candidate whose past rhetoric has fostered division. The country and our cities are better served by leaders who put law, order, and unity above spectacle and grievance.

Hardworking Americans should be angry that our institutions are treated like campaign props. If the goal of public service is to fight for the public, then those who serve must be above reproach — not trotted out to rally the base when indictment headlines break. The courthouse, not the stage, is where these questions must be resolved, and the people deserve straight answers, not chants and theatrics.

Voters should treat both the indictment and the rally as connected signals, not isolated events: an embattled attorney general using celebrity and campaign theater to avoid accountability, and a mayoral candidate cozying up to that theatrics-friendly culture. Don’t let dramatic chants and staged solidarity replace sober judgment — demand transparency, demand responsibility, and demand leaders who defend every New Yorker, not just their own political tribe.
