Juneteenth vs July 4th: Dividing Patriots for Politics?

Juneteenth has often sparked debates within American society, with some questioning its relevance or necessity as a public holiday. It’s important to approach this topic with an open mind and a genuine willingness to understand its historical and cultural significance. Juneteenth commemorates a pivotal moment in American history, marking the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had officially been signed.

Some might argue that Juneteenth is unnecessary or even divisive, but these viewpoints often stem from a lack of understanding about the holiday’s historical roots. There is no competition in honoring various aspects of history. Just as we observe Veterans Day and Memorial Day for different aspects of military history, Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the struggle for freedom and human rights in our nation’s history. It’s about recognizing a specific and significant event that played a pivotal role in shaping the country we live in today.

Many Americans might not have been aware of Juneteenth in previous years, leading them to question its legitimacy. The lack of awareness, however, does not diminish its importance. It’s a learning opportunity, showcasing the diversity of American history and the contributions of black Americans in shaping national narratives. Instead of dismissing Juneteenth, there should be an eagerness to learn and appreciate the multiplicity of American stories.

For those concerned about overshadowing other historical commemorations, it’s crucial to understand that the existence of Juneteenth doesn’t diminish other historical events or holidays. It stands alongside them, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of American history. The Civil War and the efforts that ended slavery cannot be overlooked, and neither can the fact that once enslaved people celebrated learning of their freedom on June 19th, 1865.

In embracing Juneteenth, it’s a chance to reflect on how America has grown since those turbulent times. It’s not only about remembering the past but also about striving toward a future where liberty and justice for all are more than just words. Just as the Republican Party, with President Abraham Lincoln, took significant steps toward abolishing slavery, today’s society can continue moving towards unity and understanding by recognizing and respecting all parts of its rich history.
