Liberal Education System Cripples Our Children’s Future

In recent times, Washington has been criticized for its apparent failure to uphold promises, particularly from both political parties. This sentiment resonates strongly with the American public, who have watched as political leaders promised to control the border, move an embassy to Jerusalem, and dissolve certain governmental departments, yet none of these goals have been fully realized. Among these departments, the Department of Education garners significant attention, with calls for its elimination echoing in political discourse.

The establishment of the Department of Education dates back to the Carter administration, posing the grand vision of enhancing educational standards across the nation. Fast forward several decades and, despite trillions in spending, the results seem disheartening. Test scores in vital subjects like reading, math, and science are depressingly low, leaving many to question the return on this massive investment. It prompts a reflection on whether the federal oversight in education has achieved its intended goals or if it’s merely become another bureaucratic behemoth devouring taxpayers’ money.

The call to return education governance from a federal to a state level seems to gain traction among conservative circles. Proponents argue it’s a sensible move that aligns with principles of smaller government and increased local control. Advocates claim this shift would empower states to cater educational policies more finely tuned to their unique populations. Critics, however, posit that the complications might undermine equality in educational resources across states. Yet, given current outcomes, questioning the status quo and considering change could be exactly what is needed.

Education infrastructure, as it stands, appears riddled with inefficiencies. Students are reportedly graduating without basic literacy skills, despite the exorbitant amounts funneled into the system annually. Instances of failing students being pushed through to prevent failing school rates from appearing in national metrics are emblematic of deeper systemic issues. Parents and communities, in many cases, find themselves on the sidelines, powerless to initiate meaningful reform due to entrenched interests that benefit from preserving the status quo.

The complex relationship between education unions and federal politics further clouds effective reform. During the pandemic, unions played pivotal roles in school operations, often prioritizing their agendas over students’ well-being. It’s not surprising when claims arise that union dues, derived from teacher salaries, reinforce political cycles that resist significant reforms, such as opening charter schools—which offer alternative options to struggling parents and students. This cozy relationship only intensifies frustrations with how education remains deceptively static, despite swelling outward appearances of reform initiatives and funding boosts.

In such a muddled environment, fresh perspectives on educational policy are now more essential than ever. Shaking up the federal approach might seem drastic, but when the outcome is decades of disappointing student performance and crushing debt levels for graduates of elusive “no-name” colleges, reevaluating education from the ground up is a reasonable stance. Instead of perpetually throwing money at problems hoping for turnaround, a streamlined, innovative, state-focused approach to education could nurture improved outcomes, ensuring future generations don’t drown in debt and demotivation. And let’s face it, something has to change if we want future generations who know more about history than just the first Thanksgiving benders or can confidently place Ukraine on a map.
