MacKenzie Scott Rises to America’s Third Most Generous Philanthropist

**McKenzie Scott: A Philanthropic Powerhouse Making Waves in Generosity**

In the latest installment of philanthropic news, McKenzie Scott has made headlines yet again, securing her spot as America’s third most generous donor. With her recent announcement, the billionaire philanthropist revealed an astonishing $7.2 billion in charitable contributions for the year, marking the largest amount since she began publicly detailing her donations back in 2019. This brings her total lifetime giving to a jaw-dropping $26 billion, putting her in elite company alongside charitable titans like Warren Buffett and Bill Gates.

Donating more than many of the richest individuals in the world, Scott has surpassed both Michael Bloomberg and George Soros in dollar terms. For those wondering, Buffett leads the pack at around $65 billion, while Gates closely follows with approximately $48 billion. Though Soros has given a higher percentage of his wealth, Scott takes the silver medal in that category, too. According to Forbes, Bloomberg’s total sits at $21.1 billion, while Soros’s Open Society Foundations have recorded $24.2 billion in donations. Simply put, Scott is redefining generosity as we know it.

Her most recent philanthropic haul didn’t just stop at impressive dollar figures; it was filled with purpose too. Scott chose to support around 200 organizations, focusing on areas like higher education, especially Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), programs for underserved students, and climate initiatives. Some recipients include the Global Methane Hub and Forests People Climate, among others. Scott has made a name for herself as a donor who prefers one-time, no-strings-attached gifts, and this year, many recipients are organizations that have already benefited from her generosity in the past.

Although her wealth stems from Amazon—thanks to her divorce from founder Jeff Bezos—she is using it in a way that reflects her commitment to meaningful change. While Bezos is currently the world’s third richest man, worth around $242 billion, his philanthropic efforts lag far behind those of his ex-wife. In fact, Scott has given away more than 75% of the shares she received from Amazon, emphasizing her belief in giving over accumulating wealth.

Instead of a traditional private foundation, Scott operates differently. She has been making significant donations through donor-advised funds (DAFs), allowing her to offload more of her Amazon shares tax-efficiently. While private foundations are required to distribute a minimum of 5% of assets annually, DAFs offer more flexibility and less disclosure. This strategy not only avoids capital gains taxes but also maximizes her philanthropic efforts. The result? A streamlined way to contribute to causes close to her heart while still navigating the complexities of wealth distribution.

In a world where many billionaires lead quietly or in the shadows, McKenzie Scott is a standout figure, demonstrating that generosity can come in waves—make that a tsunami, in her case. As this Philanthropic powerhouse continues to redefine giving, one can’t help but feel inspired by her actions. Her philosophy reveals an essential truth: it’s not just about the money but the impact it makes on communities, and that’s something everyone can cheer for.
