Senator Booker and other prominent Democrats continue to assure everyone that the sky isn’t falling and that this socialist scare is little more than a Republican-led distraction. Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that the Democrats are hosting a roster of candidates this election cycle who have publicly allied themselves with the DSA. Clearly, this is not just a case of one or two enthusiastic outliers at the Democratic Party’s weekend pool party.
Governor J.B. Pritzker and others in the party seem determined to keep a “big tent” approach. Instead of distancing themselves from figures like far-left streamer Hassan Piker, who revels in the limelight, they’re shrugging off concerns about socialism’s role in their ranks. Rather conveniently, one could say, Piker appears far more interested in the attention than in whether his radical rhetoric might drag the Democratic Party down.
Some Democratic commentators, like Harold Ford Jr., attempt to downplay the influence of the DSA by pointing out that only a handful of candidates running identify as part of the socialist fringe. Yet the success of several such candidates in primaries, defeating more traditional Democratic incumbents, suggests something is stirring beneath the surface. It appears that there’s more than just a handful of socialist-minded folks sending ripples across the Democratic pool.
As much as some Democrats would like to paint a rosy picture of their party as a coalition of moderates, the constant drumbeat from the socialist side is not easy to ignore. While politicians like Rahm Emanuel stand in the wings, occasionally peeking out to criticize the rhetoric and tactics of the far-left, the reality is these voices aren’t just going to evaporate post-election.
