Media Ignores CDC’s Shocking Drop in Overdose Deaths: Who Gets Credit?

Joe Rogan noticed a chart that most of the media elite preferred to ignore, and Dave Rubin pushed the clip into the conversation so Americans could see the raw numbers for themselves. That chart, and the wider discussion around it, forces a simple question: when lives are being saved, who actually deserves the credit and who is busy rewriting the narrative to protect their failed policies? Conservatives should be loud about victories and honest about what led to them.

Provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show a staggering drop in estimated overdose deaths in 2024 — an almost 27 percent decline to roughly 80,391 deaths, the agency reported in May 2025. This is a huge swing after years of rising fatalities and it demands serious attention from anyone who claims to care about public safety and public health.

To put that turnaround in perspective, the nation endured a brutal climb in overdose deaths through the late 2010s into the early 2020s, with totals surging above 100,000 in 2021 and remaining at historically catastrophic levels in 2022. Americans were being lost in record numbers while politicians on both sides bickered, and the death toll data from the CDC make that grim history impossible to sugarcoat.

Even the smaller drop in 2023 — the first year-to-year decrease since 2018 — was sold by some as a vindication of liberal drug policies, when in fact provisional CDC notes made clear the numbers remain volatile and influenced by a mix of public-health and law-enforcement actions. Good news deserves celebration, but it also requires cold-eyed analysis before anyone rushes to claim a political win.

That caution is why the Pam Bondi episode was telling: she posted and then deleted a chart that misattributed timing and credit for the fall in overdose deaths, and outside analysis pointed to the sharpest recent declines occurring before the current administration’s major new actions. Americans deserve leaders who will tell the truth about when progress happened and who actually earned it.

Meanwhile, critics have rightly pushed back on sweeping, self-serving claims about dramatic interdictions at sea. Fact-checkers noted that assertions about every intercepted boat saving tens of thousands of lives are misleading, and pointed out that much of the deadly fentanyl entering our country travels over land routes from Mexico, not exclusively in exotic “drug boats.” Facts matter when lives are on the line and when politicians try to convert tough talk into trophies.

Let’s be blunt: conservatives should both celebrate the lives saved and insist on policy that actually reduces deaths — enforced borders, relentless targeting of cartel networks, and robust cooperation with regional partners. If enforcement and pressure on suppliers are a factor in the decline, then those tactics deserve more investment and fewer partisan caveats. We don’t win by pretending results belong to political slogans; we win by doubling down on what works.

The media and the left will scramble to assign credit where it benefits their messaging, but hardworking Americans know bravery when they see it — from law enforcement on the ground to whistleblowers and podcasters who amplify data the mainstream won’t. If the trends hold, we should push every policy that continues to cut overdoses, demand transparency about how the drops were achieved, and reward results rather than spin.

This is not about ego; it’s about saving American lives and restoring common-sense enforcement that protects our communities. Joe Rogan saw a chart that should have forced the press to stop politicking and start governing — conservatives must keep that pressure up, hold leaders accountable, and make sure the next chapter in this fight is one of sustained victory, not recycled excuses.
