In the latest episode of the DNC Drama, one of their own, Graham Platner, decided to exit stage left with flames licking at his heels. Platner, in what can only be described as a self-destructive spectacle, managed to dismantle his own campaign with astonishing efficiency. You might think the Democrats would be cleaning up the mess, but they’re too busy trying to figure out how this disaster unfolded in the first place. It’s enough to make you wonder if they’re going to start offering a class in “How to Spot a Walking Scandal” at their next retreat.
Platner was, in many ways, the Democrats’ golden boy. They envisioned him as the quintessential everyman, straight out of an advertisement for paper towels – the rough-and-tumble guy who gives your kitchen a good scrubbing. Unfortunately for them, it turns out that he had a little more in common with their paper towels slogan; he was decidedly less absorbent of good judgment. Amid revelations of a Nazi tattoo and other unsavory allegations, Platner’s paper towel illusion quickly became a soggy mess.
The Democrats, much like Platner, now find themselves surrounded by questions about their judgment. Is the pool of qualified men so shallow that they thought Platner was a safe bet? Apparently, recruiting a decent candidate has become as difficult for the Democrats as convincing James Talarico of traditional Theistic pronouns. Meanwhile, policies dressed up as working-class-friendly continue to appeal only to the kind of elites that see themselves as part of some grand, misunderstood proletariat while sipping gourmet lattes in their luxury urban shoeboxes.
It’s not just Platner’s rapid exit that should have the Democrats worried. It’s the rising tide of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) candidates who are starting to look appealing by comparison. Unlike the party bigwigs who major in vague promises and minor in self-preservation, these DSA candidates appear to actually, gasp, believe in something. Sure, they might sound like they’re penning a sequel to Utopia with ideas like abolishing prisons and redistributing everyone’s wealth, but at least they’re consistent. In a party where many are just trying to hold onto power any way they can, these self-styled revolutionaries offer a semblance of honesty – even if it’s packaged in absurdity.
Then there’s Planned Parenthood, which swung in to support Platner despite multiple allegations. You know you’ve hit peak irony when an organization claiming to champion women’s rights decides to back a candidate with a history of mistreating women. The hypocrisy is almost too much to handle, even by today’s standards. At what point will liberal women decide they’ve had enough of being expected to blindly support anyone with a “D” next to their name, regardless of their behavior? Apparently, the bar couldn’t be lower, or as some might say, it’s underground.
As the Democrats scramble to move past the Platner debacle, it’s clear that the fallout transcends just this one race. Their brand is marred not just by this incident but by a long history of hypocrisy that more voters are beginning to sniff out. The echoes of support from politicians who prided themselves on the “Me Too” era now ring hollow, proving that when it comes to politics, it’s the integrity—or lack thereof—that leaves a lasting impression.
