Red State Official Claims Trump EO Will Transform America

The debate over education reform is heating up again, with Education Secretary Linda McMahon advocating for the return of education control to the states. She envisions the states as creative and innovative laboratories, reminiscent of what the founders intended. It seems there’s an increasing push from Republicans to dismantle the federal grip on education, much to the chagrin of some on the other side of the aisle who believe otherwise. McMahon’s vision is a return to localized control, which she believes will get bureaucracy out of kids’ classrooms and pave the way for innovative approaches.

Democrats in Congress are vocally skeptical, arguing that figures like President Trump and others in his orbit might never have even set foot in a public school, presumably implying they are out of touch with real educational needs. They toss around beliefs that Trump’s administration lacks understanding of public education and the role of federal oversight. It seems they fear that without the Department of Education, chaos and dark ages in education will ensue. Snippets like these make one wonder if they think Americans can’t possibly handle schooling without Uncle Sam’s guiding hands.

On the flip side, there’s Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters, who staunchly defends Trump’s educational vision, claiming it is one of the best this country has seen. Walters, echoing the founders’ wishes, champions a vision that puts power back into the hands of families and encourages states to embrace school choice and innovation. Walters argues that erratic federal interference has only worsened academic outcomes and suggests that the creation of the Department of Education back in the 1970s was more a political favor than a necessity. The Democrats lament the fall of a golden era they hope existed due to this department, but the real numbers tell another story, with deteriorating student performance across the board.

Parents, understandably, are hesitant about change. After all, the notion of scrapping an entire federal department is bold, to say the least. However, Walters reassures that states like Oklahoma are leading by example with local innovations. It’s like telling parents to hang tight because there’s light at the end of this bureaucratic tunnel. With a focus on merit pay for teachers and outcome-driven activities, the aim is to foster educational excellence rather than what some see as Federal Department–fueled indoctrination trips.

What really grinds some gears is the poll showing a stark divide in opinion on the matter, with most Republicans in favor of closing the Department, while Democrats stand opposed. Critics of the federal involvement state that all it has gifted us with are policies like DEI and CRT incorporated into classrooms, which they see as distractions from real learning. According to this faction, America’s education system needs to get back to the basics—math, science, reading, and a heavy dose of old-fashioned patriotism. It is believed that restoring power to the local families will foster a thriving education tailored to the true needs of America’s children. Whether the states can rise to the challenge and prove the naysayers wrong remains to be seen, but the gauntlet has been thrown.
