Sen. Thune Sounds Alarm: America in Deep Peril

In the latest episode of political theatrics on Capitol Hill, Congress failed to reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), a key tool for sniffing out threats to national security. This section allows intelligence agencies to monitor communications of foreign targets outside of the U.S., which, of course, sometimes drags in unsuspecting Americans. Critics argue it violates the Fourth Amendment’s ban on unreasonable searches, making this more controversial than who wore it better at the Met Gala.

The recent roadblock came hot on the heels of President Trump’s decision to appoint William Pultney as the acting director of national intelligence. His choice seems to have caused a bipartisan fit among lawmakers, akin to a toddler meltdown over a nixed dessert. In an unexpected plot twist, Trump nominated Jay Clayton, a former Securities and Exchange Commission chairman, to replace Tulsi Gabbard, further stirring the pot. The spat over these appointments seems to be a convenient excuse for Democrats to not extend FISA, further highlighting their modern art of filibustering key legislation.

On the sidelines, Senate Majority Leader John Thune pointed to the math of Senate votes, emphasizing that even if an issue is as popular as using ranch dressing in the Midwest, Democrats have been united against advancing many of Trump’s initiatives. One of those important to the President is the Save America Act, a piece of legislation touted as necessary to ensure voting integrity by requiring something as simple as showing an ID—a concept as sensible as wearing a seatbelt.

Of course, Thune also touched on the Senate Parliamentarian, Elizabeth McDonough, whom President Trump has publicly criticized on social media for being an obstacle to his agenda. Apparently, unless Thune has a secret magic wand to woo more Democrats or magically replace McDonough, legislation like the Save America Act might have to take a number and wait its turn.

An interesting subplot in this Capitol soap opera is the Texas primary race, where Trump threw his weight behind Ken Paxton over John Cornyn, a seasoned senator and favorite among GOP stalwarts. Thune has expressed his intent to rally behind Paxton to keep Texas convincingly red, because, as we all know, losing Texas would be akin to serving ice cream in July and calling it a snowstorm.

And then there’s the added drama of the “weaponization” accusations flung at Pultney, with Democrats suggesting he’s going to turn the intelligence community into some kind of clandestine spy cabal. One might humorously wonder if they think he’s setting up for the next James Bond installment. Yet, ignoring the real world of security threats to focus on party rivalries seems a bit like flamingos worrying about how tannins affect their feathers.

So while Rome may not be burning, Washington D.C. seems to be perpetually smoldering in political back-and-forth, where passing legislation is as unpredictable as rolling a pair of dice. Where this FISA situation lands is anyone’s guess, but you can bet both sides will continue partaking in their political theater, all while hoping to keep the curtain from falling on national security.
