‘The Five’ Says America’s Crisis Hits Unthinkable Depths

In the world of politics, it seems the real talent show happens not on television, but in congressional hearings. Recently, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant found himself on the receiving end of some theatrical antics during a heated debate at such a hearing. The congress members seemed more interested in putting on a good show than in having a substantive discussion about the economy. With political points to score rather than real topics to address, these hearings felt more like a circus than a meaningful exchange of ideas.

The Treasury Secretary, often considered a “silent assassin” for his composed demeanor, faced quite the raucous crowd. Mad Maxine Waters led the charge, seemingly more focused on hurling accusations and demanding a heated performance than in discussing economic policies. There was no room for debating the impact of tariffs or discussing solutions for rising interest rates. Instead, what we witnessed was an event driven by raised voices and pointed fingers—some might label it an educational opportunity on what decorum should not look like.

Conservative commentators had a field day analyzing this spectacle, pointing out the humor and irony in the scenario. They noted how, if confronted with an intellectual opponent, one might think basic courtesy and preparation would be in order. Instead, it seemed the objective was to overpower by sheer volume rather than content. It’s a wonder why some politicians still believe yelling louder could take the place of having sound policies. If audience laughter is what they were after, their mission was accomplished. But if resolving issues was on the agenda, the public was left waiting.

There’s a noticeable shift in politics from substantive debate to political theater. Thanks to social media and the constant need for viral content, it seems some politicians are more focused on gaining followers than on gaining followers of sound policies. Historic debates on taxes, education, and regulations have morphed into platforms for audience-grabbing drama. Once upon a time, wisdom and experience in the committee room were prized; now it appears to be more about who can shout the loudest.

In these hearings, the lack of serious discourse suggests that some have forgotten—and forgone—their responsibilities to the American people. Theatrics may serve as entertainment, but they do little to solve the issues facing the country. Whether it’s about addressing the housing market crisis or navigating the complexities of the modern economy, perhaps it’s time both sides take a cue. Stepping back from the performance and moving towards pragmatic policy conversations would serve everyone far better than the current spectacle on display. For now, we in the audience can only hope for a return to reasoned discourse instead of the next installment of this political soap opera.
