‘The Five’ Struggles with Vocabulary Crisis

In a world where every politician seems to be speaking in circles, there’s Gretchen Whitmer trying to steer her ship towards 2028. She’s got her sights set on being relatable and approachable, but for some reason, her choice of vocabulary veers towards the word ‘obtuse.’ Now, call it what you will, but isn’t ‘obtuse’ just a highfalutin way of saying ‘you people just don’t get it’? Maybe, when you’re trying so hard to connect with ordinary folks, it’s best to leave the SAT words at home.

Whitmer hails from the great state of Michigan and has made headlines by hobnobbing with both sides of the aisle, even reaching out to President Trump. This doesn’t sit well with her party at times, but let’s face it, reaching across the aisle is usually frowned upon unless, of course, you come bearing gifts—or funding for a military installation, as the case may be. It seems fresh ideas won’t cut it anymore, and if you want to pull in the votes, you better bring some pork barreling with a side of practicality.

As the Democrats eye 2028, people are asking if being real and direct means being more like the MAGA crowd. It’s a bit of a conundrum, isn’t it? After all, if Democrats start sounding like Republicans, who’s going to sound like Democrats? Whitmer, with her blending of policies and outreach, might just be betting that the traditional lines are blurring. But for those of us watching this spectacle unfold, the question remains: can she really bring people together, or will she end up alienating everyone?

Whitmer’s approach to issues like police funding and women’s sports has people puzzled. One minute she talks about the big tent and unity, and the next, she’s championing policies that seem to divide more than unite. It’s hard to strike a balance when parts of your platform seem to be on another planet. We’ve heard many politicians play this tune: “the voters don’t get it when they lose, and the voters spoke when they win.” It’s a convenient melody unless you’re hoping for genuine conversation and understanding.

Then there’s the quibble over green policies. Much like an ill-fated windmill in Massachusetts, some initiatives seem to spin without powering much of anything. Whitmer makes the rounds promoting her environmental bona fides, but when costs rise without real results, voters might start to wonder if they’re just doing the work for her next campaign rally. For someone aiming to be relatable, perhaps tackling these bread-and-butter issues would be a good start, preferably without those pesky obtuse words.
