Time to Cut Federal Power: Tom Basile Sounds the Alarm on Spending

In a world where the slogan “less government, more freedom” often gets tossed around like a hot potato, one recent discussion sheds light on the philosophy behind it. It revolves around the idea of natural law and the limited role of government, as championed by thinkers like John Locke. The deep dive into this subject began with an examination of what the federal government’s duties should truly entail. After all, it is a large and often unwieldy machine that can create more hassle than harmony if not properly kept in check.

Many agree that the government should take the lead in protecting the nation’s sovereignty, handling foreign affairs, and ensuring a strong national defense. This also includes settling disputes among the states and maintaining a fair justice system. And let’s not forget about the beautiful national parks, which keep our natural wonders from disappearing under concrete and skyscrapers. However, where things get a bit murky is when the government expands its reach into areas like environmental regulations, expansive education programs, and the sprawling welfare system. Those topics stir a bit more debate around the dinner table, and rightly so.

Over the last 75 years, this growth has resulted in trillions of taxpayer dollars being spent and a staggering national debt rising like an overcooked soufflé. Many believe states already have the capacity to manage their own programs effectively, often at no additional cost to citizens. The problem arises when forces in Washington, D.C., believe they know better than local governments what’s good for the folks living down the road. Who really thinks a bureaucrat sitting in an office far away understands the needs of a local community better than the community itself? It’s a question worth pondering.

The recent discussions around the “Schumer shutdown” could serve as a surprising catalyst for meaningful change. It could challenge the very foundations of federal power and possibly reposition the focus back on the states. It seems that a glimpse of a few weeks without the federal government fully functioning could be enough proof for many that life can go on quite well without every single aspect of government intervention. In fact, the argument could be made that a little less bureaucracy and a lot more freedom might be just what the doctor ordered.

As the nation weighs the benefits and drawbacks of a limited government, the idea that we could slowly return to the principles laid out by our Founding Fathers becomes tantalizing. Indeed, embracing these original values could lead to a more prosperous and vibrant country where states have the liberty to dictate their destinies, rather than being bogged down by a federal system that sprawls beyond what the creators of our republic would have ever recognized. Now, wouldn’t that be a plot twist worthy of a good tale?
