Trump Eager to Finish Job on Iran, Says Guy Benson

The drama continues as President Trump finds new ways to keep the world on edge, this time with Iran’s unyielding antics. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for the global economy, remains closed, courtesy of Iran’s audacity. With President Trump in Washington, he’s made it very clear that the latest Iranian proposition is not just a deal breaker, but as he eloquently put it, “totally unacceptable”. One might wonder if the Iranians missed the memo on negotiating because offering less than the minimum when your economy is sinking is a bold move, even for them.

For over 50 days now, Iran has been toying with global trade by keeping the Strait of Hormuz shut tighter than a newly painted door. The United Nations Ambassador, Mike Walls, is pushing for the Security Council to call out the Iranians for their poor manners. It’s almost precious how they think playing hide-and-seek with international ships, redirecting 61 vessels around their playground, won’t bring about consequences. Adding insult to injury, a British cargo ship was just attacked near Qatar, making it clear that diplomacy has left the building.

Behind the scenes, the U.S. is keeping busy trying to secure some sort of deal. President Trump received Iran’s latest response through Pakistan, which was likely as thrilling as watching paint dry. It seems like Iran is keen on dragging out the negotiations, hoping perhaps to lull the international community into submission through sheer tedium. On the other hand, President Trump, ever the capitalist, is preparing for a trip to China, hoping to sprinkle some “America first” magic on the discussions about trade, investments, and possibly scolding Iran somewhere along the way.

Iran’s suggestions for a peace deal are, in no uncertain terms, a smorgasbord of half-hearted promises. They’ve offered a temporary halt to uranium enrichment but refuse to play ball for the 20-year commitment that would make the world sleep easier. Their idea of peace seems rooted in disarmament for a hot minute before resuming business as usual. It’s almost like they expect the international community to buy a used car from a guy who insists it’s only had one careful owner, despite the rust and shady paperwork.

Meanwhile, our allies in the Middle East are undoubtedly eyeing this unfolding episode of international diplomacy with skepticism. We’ve got Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Presidential Envoy Steve Wickoff meeting with Qatar’s top brass in the sunny locale of Miami. One might imagine the discussions included not only the obligatory condemnation of Iran but also a side of mojitos and sun lotion, because why not? As this political telenovela continues, one can only speculate what role China will play, perhaps as the peacemaker or merely a bystander.

In the end, it seems President Trump is looking for Iran to slip up just enough to justify dusting off Epic Fury, the military strategy waiting in the wings like the world’s most conspicuous secret. There’s a sense that the administration is playing a high-stakes game of chess, waiting for the right moment to topple Iran’s pawns. But until then, we’ll sit back, popcorn in hand, watching as President Trump and the rest of the world attempt to dance around Iran’s antics, eagerly awaiting the day we can finally say the Strait of Hormuz is open for business once more.
